A multi-million rand library was torched in Letsopa near Ottosdal, North West, during a violent protest.

North West Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation MEC Virginia Tlhapi has condemned the destruction of a multi-million rand library in Letsopa near Ottosdal during violent protests that erupted on Monday.

The Letsopa community library was a state-of-the-art library that included a toy library for kids and a library for the blind estimated at R12 million.

The was completed and handed over to the municipality in 2014.

“Preventing learners from their right to an education, workers from going to work and malicious destruction to infrastructure cannot be tolerated,” Tlhapi said.

“It is sad when poor communities like those of Letsopa destroy property built to change their lives, especially for their kids who use these libraries to improve their performance at school and create jobs for the local people.

Violent protesters torching Ottosdal buildings, burning tires and barricade roads over lack of service delivery

Protesters in Ottosdal in North West have moved to the central business district and are torching the municipal buildings. The Traffic Department’s offices and the boardroom of the local municipality are on fire.

The old library building in this town is also being vandalised by angry residents.

Motorists are being pelted with stones as they try to pass by and burning tyres are used to barricade roads.

Workers at two mining companies in Ottosdal, Wonderstone and Idwala, failed to report for work this morning as a result of the march that is underway. These mines are therefore not operational.

Schools, clinics and foreign shops are also closed at this stage. OFM News’ correspondent Joba Matsheng is at the scene and heavy black smoke is at the center of developments.

Attempts to get comments from the Department of Education’s spokesperson, Elias Malindi, failed as his phone rang unanswered.

Elections cannot be declared free and fair –  Another scandal of abandoned and burned ballot boxes is facing the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the North West

Another scandal of abandoned ballot boxes is facing the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the North West.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says it found two ballot boxes abandoned in the Lekwa Taemane Local Municipality, that includes Bloemhof.

The party says these boxes were found in Ward 4 near Bloemhof Primary School, earmarked as a voting station by the IEC.

OFM News previously reported that two ballot boxes were found burned in Ikageng Extension 19, Potchefstroom, on Monday.

The EFF has since called on the IEC to investigate the incident and bring those found to be on the wrong side of the Electoral Act to book.

Earlier national police spokesperson, Vish Naidoo, said at least 20 people have been arrested so far for being in contravention of the Electoral Act after they allegedly nabbed for trying to duplicate their vote.

A school was set alight in Kraaipan outside Mahikeng in the North West, allegedly by a group of people intending to boycott the general election on Wednesday.

Tlhakajeng Primary School was allegedly torched at the weekend by a group of people who were intending to boycott elections due to service delivery related problems. The school was one of the voting stations where people in the area were expected to cast their votes.

North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Mpho Motlhabane called for an investigation and the arrest of the people responsible for the torching of the school.

“Destroying public and private property is a crime and our police will not leave any stone unturned. No one is above the law, if a crime has been committed, there must be an investigation and perpetrators must be arrested.

Poor little Thandi Modise states that ‘Black Farmers Do Better Than White Farmers In South Africa”, but your farm failed (photo’s)

The National Council of Provinces chairperson Thandi Modise believes that AfriForum’s decision to privately prosecute her for animal cruelty is to advance the narrative of the failure of black farmers.

The lobby group and the SPCA announced on Thursday it would pursue the case.

Modise believes that AfriForum is targeting her to show that black people can’t farm and the case has emerged now when Parliament is embarking on a process related to land expropriation without compensation.

Modise said that in reality ‘black farmers do better than white farmers in South Africa”.

But AfriForum says it was the SPCA which approached them in November last year while Parliament’s process was adopted in February this year.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel is eager to get back into a courtroom.

Defenceless White Elderly in SA Targeted by Malicious Terrorists – Elderly Couple Violently Attacked on Smallholding and assaulted with a hammer

An 89-year-old man and his 57-year-old partner were attacked on their smallholding near Marikana on Thursday.

Three robbers broke into the couple’s house on their smallholding in the Barnardsvlei area while they were sleeping. The robbers demanded money and firearms, says lt.kol. Northwest police spokesperson Amanda Funani.

“The husband and wife were severely assaulted and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.”

The suspects fled the man’s Toyota pickup, cellphone, motorcycle, firearm and solar panels.

The bakkie was later found about 2 km from the smallholding with some of the stolen goods on the tray.

The police are still looking for the robbers.

AfriForum wins De Wildt land grab court case with Malema’s money

AfriForum was victorious in the Northern Gauteng High Court on 21 january 2019, against illegal land invaders and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The victory follows an urgent application to force the SAPS to remove land invaders who illegally occupied land in the De Wildt area in the North West. The legal cost for the application is paid from funds that were paid to AfriForum by Julius Malema and the EFF after they had lost numerous cases to AfriForum with cost.

One of these cases incidentally involved Malema’s public incitement to occupy land illegally.

“Apart from the irony that it is Malema who is, so to speak, now paying to bring land invaders to book, this is another victory for AfriForum in its battle to protect property rights in South Africa and to force the SAPS to assist the rightful landowners in protecting their properties,” says Ian Cameron, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety.
