Tornado ripped through areas of New Hanover, Pietermaritzburg, causing major destruction, fears of possibility of missing, dead people

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal has activated councillors and volunteers to assist affected communities after a tornado hit New Hanover, Pietermaritzburg, on Tuesday afternoon.

The tornado, according to the department, “ripped through the area, injuring scores of people and damaging homes and public infrastructure”.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Sipho Hlomuka said preliminary reports received by the department indicated a number of people, who had sustained injuries, were currently receiving medical treatment at surrounding hospitals.

“A number of homes have collapsed, countless trees have been uprooted and the electricity supply in the area has been interrupted. Our teams are working hard to provide support to the affected communities.”There are fears of possible missing people and deaths.

Natal farmers won court case against state dispute regarding to what should be fair and equitable remuneration for highly productive agricultural land

A 13-year court battle gave 20 farmers (willing sellers) a fair price for their land offered to the state. The claims were initially set at about 42 000 ha. Landowners offered some 9,000 ha of highly productive agricultural land to the state to settle the claim.

The government had to admit that the Valuer-General wanted to buy the farms from the farmers for almost half their value. The landowners of Melmoth in Natal entered into an agreement with the Department of Land Reform whereby they would voluntarily make land available to the government. The deal would mean R761m for the farmers.

The government has repeatedly decided that the Valuer-General’s assistance should be called and according to a “government formula” they calculated that the farmers were entitled to only R420 million.

Afrikaner Barbarism the order of the day at DUT – 9 students set fire to security officer – Student grievances degenerate into lawlessness

Rebellious students from Durban University of Technology wreaks havoc at the Steve Biko campus during a violent demonstration. They insist that the current security company be replaced. Lectures are currently suspended and nearly 34,000 students are unable to attend lectures. During the riot, 9 students were arrested after gasoline was thrown over a security guard and he was set on fire.

During the riot, two waiting rooms and the interview room were destroyed, and the 27-year-old security officer sustained serious injuries. The latter was rescued after a close escape when his colleagues saw the attack and he was rushed to hospital. Nine students between 20 and 30 years were arrested. The provincial commissioner of police strongly condemned the incident, saying that the involved students is charged with attempted murder, malicious damage to property and public violence.

Only in SA and probably a World First! – Prasa Train worth R50 Million was stolen in Umkomaas on Natal South Coast

A train belonging to the Passenger Rail Agency, a division of Transnet, was stolen from the Umkomaas railway depot and driven to Ilfracombe Station.

The two thieves whom stole an empty commuter train from a depot , took it on a 12km joy ride from eMkhomazi to Umgababa on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, leaving security guards shocked and embarrassed. The incident, left Prasa red-faced and investigating how the two men tricked the guards.

The two suspects allegedly drove the train all the way to Umgababa, and when it stopped they jumped out and fled into a nearby forest while being pursued by security guards.

According to an employee, who asked not to be named, the train only stopped when it lost momentum in an uphill area.
Another Prasa employee, working on the railway line at the time of the incident, expressed her shock.

In a social media post, the employee said she believed those behind the train theft were whoonga addicts.

Rats infest Durban CBD because of uncollected rubbish on the streets, Business and tourism now being threatened

Durban – Traders in the City centre say their businesses and health have been affected by the huge rat population that has continued to grow because of uncollected rubbish on the streets.

They say there has been an overall decline in business and tourism while the condition of buildings has also deteriorated. Areas popular with hawkers such as Warwick Junction Market, Mahatma Gandhi precinct, Berea and Durban Workshop taxi ranks as well as bus terminals have been most affected.

Pinky Nyathela, who trades at the Warwick Junction Market, said the number of rats had tripled since she began trading in 2016. “There are more rats than usual and they are becoming bigger. They are not scared of people, they look straight at you,” she said.

Health experts said the rat infestation posed a great risk which could “explode” if not brought under control.

Farm Manager ‘thrown into fire’ during violent ‘farm invasion’ in KZN

FARM ATTACK – A farm manager in KwaZulu-Natal was hospitalised with burns on Saturday after “violent thugs” invaded a farm, set it alight and allegedly threw him into the flames.

IFP MP Inkosi Bhekizizwe Luthuli revealed details about the incident in a statement on Sunday on behalf of the Mathulini Communal Property Association.

“The perpetrators of this violent and unlawful act are part of the ‘concerned group’ that is attempting to hijack a 7,500 hectare land claim from the Mathulini Communal Property Association and the Ndelo Community Trust, valued in excess of R300m. The farms that make up this land claim produce 400,000 tonnes of sugar cane annually and employ 1,200 people,” Luthuli said.

Difficult times for SA health after election of controversial chairperson, Dr Dhlomo whom was responsible for the collapse of KwaZulu-Natal’s health care services

The FF Plus foresees difficult times ahead for our country’s health sector after Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, former MEC for Health in KwaZulu-Natal, was elected as chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee for Health during the Committee’s first meeting.

Dr Dhlomo’s departure from the position of MEC in KwaZulu-Natal earlier this year was welcomed by opposition parties. While in office, he seemed to move from one crisis to the next. His “Make Me Look Like A Hospital” programme failed and he blamed the hospital management when it could not be implemented.

The programme was aimed at giving the public and hospital staff a voice so as to improve hospitals.

Dr Dhlomo is also known as the one responsible for the collapse of KwaZulu-Natal’s health care services. According to reports, hospitals were dirty and did not have the basic linen. On top of that, people died under strange circumstances in these hospitals.

State hospitals in SA frequently makes news headlines and not because of good medical care! – Addington hospital in flames, 84 patients had to be evacuated while elevators were out of order

An unexplained fire in Durban’s Addington hospital resulted in 84 patients being evacuated. Elevators have been out of order in hospital for 18 months.

The Addington Hospital in Durban had to act quickly to remove patients from the seventh floor after a fire occurred.

About 84 patients, 25 of whom were newly born babies, had to be taken to safety while firefighters assisted.

Heavy smoke clouds later threatened the ninth to thirteenth floor which forced management to implement the hospital’s emergency plan because the fire brigade had not yet arrived.

The fire was still unknown, but investigators would try to figure out what could cause panic in the hospital.

State hospitals are ever so often in the news and not because of good medical care but rather patients tied to chairs, lack of high-care medical equipment, and the fact that patients often have to take care of bedding themselves.

Sardine fever hits the KZN South coast and it is just in time for holidaymakers to experience this phenomenon natural occurrence

Durban – Sardines have been spotted in Waterfall Bluff in Port St John’s south of KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline.  Ugu South Coast Tourism CEO, Phelisa Mangcu, advises visitors to keep their eyes on the local press and follow the KZN Sharks Board, fishing experts such as GoFish, as well as the fishing charters whose business it is to know the waters and marine life of the KZN South Coast.

“Sardine activity has been spotted further south and even though the sardines take some time to move up the coast, experts are predicting great shoals moving past the KZN South Coast, which has always been best for viewing all the action as well as catching the silvery fish from the shores.”Mangcu said.

N3 Highway between Gauteng and KZN dangerous at night, be vigilant during school holidays

Vaal Triangle and other South African motorists were warned during the school holidays not to use the N3 highway between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal at night.

The N3 toll booth says there is an increase in violent incidents on the road and motorists should rather try to plan their trips for the day. The toll road starts at the Cedara Interchange in KwaZulu-Natal and ends at the Heidelberg South Interchange in Gauteng. It is one of the busiest roads in the country.

Sars auditors jailed after being caught with R200,000 cash bribe to make KZN businessman tax problems disappear

Two former SA Revenue Service (Sars) customs auditors will spend three years in jail for attempting to solicit a bribe from a prominent KwaZulu-Natal businessman “to make his tax problems disappear”.

Pranesh Maharaj and Reuben Moodley were both caught red-handed with cash bribes of R100,000 in brown envelopes during a police operation in March last year.

The two men, who both resigned from Sars during a disciplinary hearing last year, were sentenced in the Durban Regional Court on Thursday last week.

The court also sentenced them to an additional two years’ imprisonment, conditionally suspended for five years.

“The two auditors acknowledged that they had issued a notice to a well-known KwaZulu-Natal businessman in February 2018, advising him of an imminent audit of companies where he was a director.
