Natal farmers won court case against state dispute regarding to what should be fair and equitable remuneration for highly productive agricultural land

A 13-year court battle gave 20 farmers (willing sellers) a fair price for their land offered to the state. The claims were initially set at about 42 000 ha. Landowners offered some 9,000 ha of highly productive agricultural land to the state to settle the claim.

The government had to admit that the Valuer-General wanted to buy the farms from the farmers for almost half their value. The landowners of Melmoth in Natal entered into an agreement with the Department of Land Reform whereby they would voluntarily make land available to the government. The deal would mean R761m for the farmers.

The government has repeatedly decided that the Valuer-General’s assistance should be called and according to a “government formula” they calculated that the farmers were entitled to only R420 million.

Amcu workers inks R14 000 deal – most of the labourers did not even pass Grade 12 – what a huge remuneration for unskilled workers

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has signed a wage agreement with Rustenburg-based Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine, which will see miners paid a basic wage of R14 309 a month in the third year of a three-year agreement.

This is substantially less than the R17 000 a month Amcu is demanding from major employers Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Sibanye-Stillwater.

The agreement could lay the foundation for a looming showdown in the platinum sector ahead of the wage negotiations with other companies and unions in the industry.

Amcu’s rival union, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), has rejected the agreement with Siyanda, saying its members demand an increase of 6%.

NUM deputy general secretary and chief negotiator William Mabapa admits that it could face problems when it meets Siyanda later this month to renegotiate the deal, because it is the minority union at the company.

Amcu’s latest claims absurd – monthly salary remuneration and fringe benefits amount to a total of R30 000 for workers

The Amcu trade union demands a R17,000 a month compensation for platinum mine workers, and negotiations will be difficult to deal with regarding the rage that the claims has caused amongst mining houses.

The Stilwater mine currently pays miners R12,500 a month and and this has already affected the mine’s profitability, negatively .

The claimants say they expect R17,000 because of inflation and they will not settle for less.

The remuneration of those who receive the least wage is R11,500 per month, and the claim is that it is only a drop in the ocean of what the Chief Executive Officer earns per hour.

The union also demands fringe benefits such as housing subsidy, medical benefits, transport and in total it should amount to R30,000 per worker per month.

Innocent until proven guilty? Prasa places three executives on special leave, terminates former secretary’s contract – wonder if those placed on special leave will still receive full remuneration?

The suspension and placement on special leave of these executives, is to ensure a fair process based on a principle of innocent until proven guilty.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has announced that it has terminated the employment contract of its former company secretary Matome Mohube with immediate effect.

This comes after a disciplinary hearing on various charges involving various charges including falsifying board resolutions.

Dissatisfied municipal workers bring Durban CBD to a halt by obstructing streets with waste

Durban’s central business area was brought to a halt when Durban Waste Removal Agency workers blocked the streets with solid waste.

Waste trucks full of garbage were used to dump into the streets. The action is in protest against raising old MK members salaries in the department.

MK members ‘salaries are apparently increased from R9,000 to R20,000 and it appears that several departments in the Durban municipality are following the same policy regarding MK members’ remuneration, but observers reckon MK members serving are working much less than the other workers.
