Rats infest Durban CBD because of uncollected rubbish on the streets, Business and tourism now being threatened

Durban – Traders in the City centre say their businesses and health have been affected by the huge rat population that has continued to grow because of uncollected rubbish on the streets.

They say there has been an overall decline in business and tourism while the condition of buildings has also deteriorated. Areas popular with hawkers such as Warwick Junction Market, Mahatma Gandhi precinct, Berea and Durban Workshop taxi ranks as well as bus terminals have been most affected.

Pinky Nyathela, who trades at the Warwick Junction Market, said the number of rats had tripled since she began trading in 2016. “There are more rats than usual and they are becoming bigger. They are not scared of people, they look straight at you,” she said.

Health experts said the rat infestation posed a great risk which could “explode” if not brought under control.

Swimming, surfing and fishing have been banned in Durban due to raw sewage in the water. Hundreds of thousands of litres of raw sewage is flowing into the port every hour.

The eThekwini municipality’s health unit, on Thursday, ordered the City’s parks, recreation and culture department to ban all bathing on Durban’s beaches until further notice.

An associated letter circulated by Transnet National Ports Authority, states that the “severe sewage discharge” stems from the “failure of pumps at the eThekwini municipality’s Mahatma Gandhi Pump Station” – one of the deepest and biggest waste treatment facilities in the city.

Diving operations, essential to the port’s ship repair precinct, as well as all fishing in the Port of Durban have also been suspended.

The farms bought by the eThekwini Municipality from Rainbow Chicken two years ago to save and create jobs have been left barren.

The city spent R15million on the acquisition of Uitkomst and Doornrug farms in Cato Ridge when Rainbow Chicken, which has since been renamed RCL Foods Limited, announced the sale of their farms due to tough trading conditions.

The DA conducted an oversight inspection this week and found the farms were neglected and falling apart. The party’s premier candidate Zwakele Mncwango said the municipality had not lived up to its plan and failed the employees of RCL Foods who were left jobless when the farm was shut down.

About 1350 workers lost their jobs than when the farms were sold.

“Many people who used to work here are languishing in poverty without jobs whilst an establishment that cost millions of rand is lying there, deserted”, said Mncwango.

Illegal land grabs take place in Durban after hundreds of people who are fed up with slow pace of housing delivery allocated plots themselves and start building shacks

Fed up with the slow pace of housing delivery, hundreds of people have invaded vacant state land earmarked for a low-cost housing project in the Cato Crest informal settlement in Durban.

The residents descended on land in Mary Thipe Road, which boarders Mayville and Manor Gardens, on Monday and Tuesday and started clearing the bushes and allocating themselves plots to start building shacks.

While many residents were not willing to be interviewed or photographed, Happy Zwane told TimesLIVE that she was clearing the bush so that she could build her two children a home to leave them with when she dies.

“I have two children and I’m not married and I want to clear a plot for them so that when I die they would have a place to live. I don’t have a place of my own because I don’t own the place I live in. So I want to live my children with a home,” she said.
