While “BlackTwitter” as it is known in South Africa, have been spreading the myth that blacks cannot get CoronaVirus for weeks, it seems this misinformation has seriously taken hold amongst the black majority! This is probably the reason Ramaphosa had to rope in the army to enforce the lockdown.

A civil society group from Soweto called the Hola Bon Renaissance (HBR) Foundation, has taken Cyril Ramaphosa to the Constitutional Court over the 21-day lockdown in SA!

The lockdown was implemented at midnight on Thursday 26 March and prevents people from leaving their homes for anything other than essential services in an attempt to control the spread of the coronavirus.

Should Electricity Users Pay Eskom Direct? Eskom Losing a BILLION a Month Because Corrupt Municipal Councilors Steal User’s Electricity Payments!

Due to the to the default on forwarding payments by municipalities, Eskom is moving further into the red every month at a staggering rate of almost R1 BILLION every month! However, apart from SOWETO where users refuse to pay, most users do pay, but their payments get intercepted by corrupt Municipalities where the money is taken and fraudulently spent on luxuries and personal expenses of councilors.

According to the latest record, the debt burden from municipalities is more than R24 BILLION at Eskom, the large majority of it from SOWETO, which is a clear reason why the entity went bankrupt. The interest due on that must be phenomenal, if that is one could expect it to ever be paid. Instead the banksters get rich on interest by lending Eskom money.

But economic advisers say Eskom is partly responsible for the situation, because if it had applied proper credit control, at most one month’s electricity bill would have been outstanding for each municipality.</p

Court deals Soweto residents who wants to pay a flat tarrif of R150 a month for electricity a blow by striking case off the roll

Soweto owes R20bn to power provider Eskom, but residents of the township only want to pay R150 a month for their power. Mpho Sesedinyane, ANC councilor and chair of the South African National Civic Organization (Sanco) in Soweto, feels that R150 is a fair amount and that, given the state of the economy, the residents can only afford to pay this much a month for power.

However, Eskom rejected the proposal of a fixed power tariff of R150 per month for electricity. Eskom spokesperson Reneilwe Semenya said this proposal by community leaders in Soweto was unrealistic and residents had to pay for what they consumed. He also referred to the Johannesburg High Court which on Tuesday rejected an application to restore power supply to Soweto and allow residents to pay a flat rate for power.

R100 – that’s how much Soweto residents want to pay Eskom for electricity each month

The township is said to owe Eskom R18 billion in unpaid electricity bills.

This week, Lungelo Lethu Human Rights Foundation (LLHRF) is finishing up court papers in a bid to haul Eskom to the South Gauteng High Court over electricity disconnections.

LLHRF’s president King Sibiya said they want an interim court order forcing Eskom to restore electricity to about 250 households.

Sibiya said they also want to force Eskom to get into negotiations with residents over the next 18 to 24 months to discuss a flat rate of R100 for energy consumption. “There are currently about 250 houses without electricity. While the whole area owes Eskom, we think the ones whose electricity has been switched off is more urgent.

“We want to kill the culture of non-payment in Soweto. We can’t divorce ourselves from Eskom. A R100 flat rate from those who haven’t been paying is better than nothing.”

Eskom with debt burden of more than R450 billion cuts power supply to parts of Soweto due to default

The national power supplier is struggling to keep up with its debt burden of more than R450bn and the ineffective functioning of many power plants.

In addition to its own problems, Eskom has continued to act reluctantly against municipalities that do not pay their monthly consumption to Eskom, and Eskom is too cumbersome to act against the defaulters.

Areas such as Orange Farm and parts of Soweto’s power have been cut off due to default, and although it has been asked for years for power supply to be cut off by defaulters, Eskom has remained cowardly and did not.

On the last day of October, Eskom decided to cut off the power of certain defaulters, but the correct method should be to warn all municipalities that are over 30 days in arrears that their power will be cut off within two weeks if payment is not made.

While Eskom is drowning in debt and struggling to make ends meet, Soweto residents say they want their debt written off and to only pay R100 per month for unlimited electricity.

Eskom currently supplies 135,000 Soweto residents with power, but only 12% of these customers pay for electricity.

This non-payment has seen Soweto’s debt to Eskom increase from R3.6 billion in 2014 to its current level of R18 billion.

To alleviate this debt burden, Eskom is threatening to disconnect non-paying customers, remove illegal connections, and move more houses to prepaid electricity.

Soweto residents fighting back
Soweto residents, however, are having none of Eskom’s debt-collection and disconnection plans and are demanding that the power utility writes off their debt.

These residents argue that they cannot afford to pay for electricity, let alone pay off the money they owe to Eskom.

Soweto has been identified as the great sinner when it comes to outstanding debt to Eskom. The latest figures show that Soweto’s debt to the power provider is over R17bn.

The ANC Caucus in Johannesburg has called on Eskom to lace up its bootstraps and reconnect the power supply to communities like Soweto, Ivory Park and Diepsloot.

The call from the party came in the form of a march to the power utility’s headquarters at Megawatt Park in Sandton.

The ANC Caucus handed over a memorandum of demands to Eskom, with the power utility vowing to respond within seven days.

What are ANC’s demands to Eskom?
The party wants Eskom to “fulfil its mandate of providing the City’s residents with electricity”.

In a statement, the ANC Caucus lambasted the power utility for not tending to the needs of residents in areas like Soweto, Ivory Park, Diepsloot and Orange Farm, who have been left with no electricity for long durations these past few weeks.

SA’s largest township owes Eskom R17 billion – Soweto residents respond: Hell no, we won’t pay for electricity!

City Press visits Soweto and asks residents why they don’t pay for their electricity and how they could help Eskom to recoup the R17 billion owed by the people who live in SA’s largest township.

On Wednesday morning, as load shedding hit the township of 1.3 million residents, small businesses were losing money, and children had been sent home by their teachers, who said they couldn’t teach in a blackout.

While some people City Press spoke to paid their electricity bills and knew that their nonpaying neighbours were contributing to the crisis, others were steadfast in their refusal to pay for the power they used.

Soweto owes ESKOM R 17 billion, half of the total national debt – Just cut their bloody electricity to this township!

ESKOM is desperately trying to recoup money owed by municipalities – Soweto, in particular, is making that task all the more difficult.

ESKOM, South Africa’s national electricity provider, had an exceptionally shocking year in 2018. Financial losses reached dismal new depths. Irregularities, both fiscally and operationally, left the state owned enterprise floundering in the doldrums of gross incompetence. Dubious coal shortages, failed maintenance plans, industrial action and the lingering stench of corruption only added to ESKOM’s woes.
