Eskom with debt burden of more than R450 billion cuts power supply to parts of Soweto due to default

The national power supplier is struggling to keep up with its debt burden of more than R450bn and the ineffective functioning of many power plants.

In addition to its own problems, Eskom has continued to act reluctantly against municipalities that do not pay their monthly consumption to Eskom, and Eskom is too cumbersome to act against the defaulters.

Areas such as Orange Farm and parts of Soweto’s power have been cut off due to default, and although it has been asked for years for power supply to be cut off by defaulters, Eskom has remained cowardly and did not.

On the last day of October, Eskom decided to cut off the power of certain defaulters, but the correct method should be to warn all municipalities that are over 30 days in arrears that their power will be cut off within two weeks if payment is not made.

Experts believe the solutions to all of Eskom’s problems lie in converting to gas to eliminate coal pollution.

The investigation shows that gas will eventually be cheaper than coal, while the gas plant will cause about 80% less air pollution.

However, the conversion will be accompanied by high expenses, and the power supplier does not have a single cent to accomplish it.

In addition to the cost of conversion, there is the fear that renewed efforts will be made to mine the Great Karoo for underground gas, while destroying the region’s underground water.

A Brazilian expert says they have gained years of experience with clean energy systems such as hydro-energy generation, sugarcane and ethanol, which can all help to produce cleaner generation.

The ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced that plans to stabilize Eskom would be announced within “a few weeks”.

According to him, the power supply is therefore unstable. However, he has not expanded what the plans are to pay off the R420bn debt.

He also boasts in Davos that law and order are recovering in the country, but mention nothing of the 50 murders that take place daily in the country.

It is said corruption took place while Ramaphosa was in the seat as the ANC’s deputy president of the country and he did absolutely nothing to stop it. So why will he step in now? To recover under the dispensation of the ANC-regime where many corrupt people are sitting in key positions, will be a very challenging task and in some instances not physically possible.
