#BetterUnderApartheid An important electrical sub-station in Springs, which was damaged during a break-in by vandals last year, was left in the dilapidated state, creating a fire risk, has finally burnt down on Sunday, leaving thousands of residents and manufacturing businesses in the industrial area New Era, without electricity. It could take up to 2 weeks to repair the damage.

The businesses in the industrial area like Kellogg’s, will obviously lose millions of Rands in lost manufacturing. The substation was never properly fixed after the last break-in and an electrician warned the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality in a damage report, which was compiled after the last break-in, that the substation is a ticking time bomb, and was for instance, not properly earthed.

The reason for the Metro’s lack of action to fix the damage seems to be that the insurer never wanted to pay out an insurance claim for the damage caused by the vandals. Dare we ask

Will SA consider nuclear power plants and will it be safe in the hands of a Third World country ruled by the ANC regime?

It hangs on everyone’s lips: Will South Africa’s regime consider purchasing another nuclear power generation plant similar to the Koeberg plant.

South Africa is fast moving backwards and has long been no country with First World standards. With the regime’s latest efforts to light the lights, it is clear that there is so much pressure on the Ramaphosa government that they are in no way approaching one task after another and finding solutions.

Finance Minister Tito Mboweni was very busy at the Davos summit, but his busy time was only to kill fires over the Eskom scandal and the empty state coffers that lack the ability to borrow money to save SAL .

That raises the question of whether nuclear power plants are the answer to SA’s power supply, but experts believe the Koeberg power station is a prime example of First World equipment, and in fact can’t be safe in the hands of a Third World country.”

Brace yourself for stage 8 #RollingBlackOuts or 10-hour daily blackout, as municipalities are preparing for the worst

Eskom was forced to implement stage 6 load shedding in December – its worst ever blackout – sending the country into a panic as not many people were aware of what that stage actually meant for them.

Municipalities too, were caught off-guard, with Johannesburg electricity distributor City Power saying at the time that it had no load-shedding schedule for Stage 6.

The year is 2020, and generation and maintenance challenges continue to mount at the state company which generates 96% of South Africa’s electricity.

As a result, all municipalities have been advised to adjust their load shedding schedule up to stage 8, the Buffalo City Municipality said in a statement on Saturday (11 January).

With each stage representing a curtailment of 5% of the national load, stage 8 will equate to 40% of the load being shed, the municipality said.

Fire Destroy De Aar’s Courts After Explosion Because De Aar’s Volunteer Fire Service Has 30 Year Old Firetruck With Leaky Hoses

Is civilization too complicated for Africa? A huge fire destroyed De Aar’s Courts. The volunteer fire squad arrived with the town’s 30 year old fire truck but could not extinguish the fire due to leaking fire hoses.

De Aar was shaken by a huge explosion last night at 21:45. Only about 2 hours later a huge fire was spotted at the local Magistrates Court. The part of the building that was destroyed houses the Roving, High and Regional court. So in effect De Aar don’t have Courts anymore.

The suspicion is that the fire was started by electricity supply to the town that was too high, because of faulty equipment. De Aar do not have a fulltime Fire Department and only uses a voluntary fire service. When they finally arrived with the town’s 30 year old fire truck, their efforts to put out the fire were hampered by fire hoses that were leaking. Eskom with debt burden of more than R450 billion cuts power supply to parts of Soweto due to default

The national power supplier is struggling to keep up with its debt burden of more than R450bn and the ineffective functioning of many power plants.

In addition to its own problems, Eskom has continued to act reluctantly against municipalities that do not pay their monthly consumption to Eskom, and Eskom is too cumbersome to act against the defaulters.

Areas such as Orange Farm and parts of Soweto’s power have been cut off due to default, and although it has been asked for years for power supply to be cut off by defaulters, Eskom has remained cowardly and did not.

On the last day of October, Eskom decided to cut off the power of certain defaulters, but the correct method should be to warn all municipalities that are over 30 days in arrears that their power will be cut off within two weeks if payment is not made.

Consumers face 80% electricity tariff hike to save Eskom from their self-inflicted mess

Eskom has announced that they will put a four-point plan in place to get out of their self inflicted mess. They will firstly obtain an 80% increase in electricity through a court order, and secondly they will unbundle the entity.

Third, Eskom will introduce savings measures. However, it is not indicated how and what savings measures will be implemented.

Meanwhile, senior officials of Eskom, who receive between R1.5 and R3 million a year in salary, have announced that they will approach the court to claim back working increases of 4.7%.

Calculations show that it will drive the bankrupt entity out of a further R200 to R300 million.

Cyber crooks try to hold Johannesburg’s City Power to ransom after a malicious program found its way on to the computer system and network

After a cyber-attack that debilitated its servers, Johannesburg’s City Power says it has successfully restored electricity vending within hours of the security breach being identified.

Some residents of Johannesburg were left in the dark as a ransomware attack took out the City’s power servers, preventing residents from being able to purchase and upload electricity units.

The attack was identified in the early hours of Thursday 25 July, according to spokesperson Isaac Mangena. Starting at 8.30am on the 25th, City Power’s official Twitter account, @CityPowerJHB, issued a series of tweets explaining the situation.

According to Adam Oxford, a freelance technology journalist, “Ransomware is a type of cyber attack in which a malicious program finds its way on to a computer system or network, and the damaging payload of that program will be to destroy data or encrypt it to the point where it is irretrievable.”

Just a pity the ANC regime decided that Eskom must come to aid of those who cannot pay! – Bankrupt Eskom now wants to stop power supply to areas that sabotage power-lines

Eskom said in a statement that it had decided not to provide the power to areas that have repeatedly interrupted due to line sabotage connections and meters that are bypassed with other connections.

Line connections cause power outages when illegal power drains are done, and Eskom workers are often chased out when repairs are needed.

Millions of rand’s power is illegally tapped into locations and squatter camps, and to date, the power supply has continued to supply the areas.

Observers say this is the first positive step the Eskom management has taken, but hopes that the power will not be further provided to municipalities that do not pay their accounts at Eskom in time.

The illegal tapping of power from the main supply wires causes sub-stations to burn out because they are overloaded.

The ANC Caucus in Johannesburg has called on Eskom to lace up its bootstraps and reconnect the power supply to communities like Soweto, Ivory Park and Diepsloot.

The call from the party came in the form of a march to the power utility’s headquarters at Megawatt Park in Sandton.

The ANC Caucus handed over a memorandum of demands to Eskom, with the power utility vowing to respond within seven days.

What are ANC’s demands to Eskom?
The party wants Eskom to “fulfil its mandate of providing the City’s residents with electricity”.

In a statement, the ANC Caucus lambasted the power utility for not tending to the needs of residents in areas like Soweto, Ivory Park, Diepsloot and Orange Farm, who have been left with no electricity for long durations these past few weeks.

Eskom and municipalities lose about R4bn per annum, due to electricity theft. The power utility said over the past three years it has disconnected 76 931 illegal power connections. Informal settlements in Protea South and Kwa-Thema are the areas where illegal power cables stretch like cobwebs to provide electricity to more than 6000 residents.

A Gauteng community has recently staged a protest at Eskom’s doors to have their power restored.

The Winterveldt community activists have been protesting at the Eskom office in Menlyn. The community representatives launched a sit-in since Tuesday 2 July.

This followed a meeting in which Eskom had stated that they would not restore power to areas where residents were neither buying nor paying for electricity services.
