Warning! SAA Strike will intensify – Talks between National carrier and striking unions collapse

JOHANNESBURG – Talks between South African Airways (SAA) management and striking workers have collapsed.

Union leaders briefed the media and workers after the parties met on Saturday in an attempt to resolve the strike which began on Friday.

Workers are demanding an 8%wage increase while SAA is offering 5.9%.

According to the National Union for Metalworkers of South Africa’s (Numsa) Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, unions and the national carrier have failed to find each other.

Numsa and the South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca) have warned they will intensify the strike across all SAA departments.

“If you have workers at the Civil Aviation Authority on strike, it means that none of the planes are going to fly. It’s not just SAA, its all planes”, said Hlubi-Majola.

The struggling state owned airline says its working around the clock to introduce additional capacity on the domestic network.

The SABC wants to increase your TV licence fees- But who are actually still paying for this service that only caters for a certain group of people?

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is looking at increasing its TV licence fees as the embattled state broadcaster continues to face financial challenges.

In a parliamentary presentation on 28 August, the SABC said that it has drafted and sent a proposal to increases TV licences fees to communications minister, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams.

However, SABC board chairperson, Bonamisa Makhatini, has made it clear that this increase may not be enough to cover the broadcaster’s many expenses.

“There had been eight increases in 24 years,” he said. “If the fee were to be increased, it had to be considered what was affordable. Content had to be attractive and compelling.”

One of the key problems with raising TV licences is the issue of compliance with the broadcaster reporting a compliance level of just 27.8% in October last year.

Consumers face 80% electricity tariff hike to save Eskom from their self-inflicted mess

Eskom has announced that they will put a four-point plan in place to get out of their self inflicted mess. They will firstly obtain an 80% increase in electricity through a court order, and secondly they will unbundle the entity.

Third, Eskom will introduce savings measures. However, it is not indicated how and what savings measures will be implemented.

Meanwhile, senior officials of Eskom, who receive between R1.5 and R3 million a year in salary, have announced that they will approach the court to claim back working increases of 4.7%.

Calculations show that it will drive the bankrupt entity out of a further R200 to R300 million.

Petrol Price expected to go up 7 cents for 95 octane and 4 cents for 93 grade

The latest data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) points to a flat month in August for petrol prices – though there may be good news for diesel drivers.

At mid-month, the group is showing a small increase in both grades of petrol for August, with pump prices expected to go up 7 cents per litre for 95 octane, and 4 cents per litre for 93 grade.

Diesel, however, is currently showing an over recovery of 20 cents per litre, which means at least some motorists may be paying less next month.

The flat rate in petrol prices is due a reversal in trends for both international petroleum prices and the rand/dollar exchange rate.

For the first two weeks in July, the rand has strengthened against the dollar, contributing to a 25-27 cents per litre drop in both the petrol and diesel prices.

This has been undercut by the movement in the international product prices – at least for petrol – which are contributing to a 30 to 33 cents per litre

Farm attacks rise by 60% over the past decade – TAU SA announces semi-annual agricultural crime figures.

TAU SA is extremely concerned about the increase and brutality of farm attacks in South Africa, with a 60% increase over the past decade.
These statistics were announced today during the organization’s announcement of farm attack and murder figures.

According to TAU SA’s official Incident Register, which has been updated since 1990, 1 125 farm attacks were reported between 1990 and 1999. Between 2000 and 2009, 1 407 cases – a 22% increase – were reported, and 2 616 farm attacks across the country – a 60% increase – have been recorded in the past nine years from 2010 to 2019.

In the corresponding times, farm murders increased from 637 (1990 to 1999) by 22% (799 murders) between 2000 and 2009. In the next nine years to 2019, 586 farm murders occurred.

Humour has it that  ANC regime can reduce SA’s  debt burden by increasing VAT to 20% – nobody is keeping pace with the fact that corruption are the cause of state debt

The government should increase the VAT rate by at least 5% to reduce the debt burden in the provincial roads’ maintenance account which is now six times higher than the province’s expenditure.

Reports indicate that the South African roads, which are in a dire state, are now desperately seeking funds since there is was already a backlog of R197bn in 2013 to more than R400bn.

The figures are the logical conclusion that is made by experts and with very bad humour that this  problem can be solved by increasing VAT to 19% or 20%, but the problem may escalate if the funds end up in corrupt hands.

Amcu workers inks R14 000 deal – most of the labourers did not even pass Grade 12 – what a huge remuneration for unskilled workers

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has signed a wage agreement with Rustenburg-based Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine, which will see miners paid a basic wage of R14 309 a month in the third year of a three-year agreement.

This is substantially less than the R17 000 a month Amcu is demanding from major employers Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Sibanye-Stillwater.

The agreement could lay the foundation for a looming showdown in the platinum sector ahead of the wage negotiations with other companies and unions in the industry.

Amcu’s rival union, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), has rejected the agreement with Siyanda, saying its members demand an increase of 6%.

NUM deputy general secretary and chief negotiator William Mabapa admits that it could face problems when it meets Siyanda later this month to renegotiate the deal, because it is the minority union at the company.

f we’re not paying over the odds for our petrol, we’re being asked to fork out more for our groceries. Data shared by economist Wandile Sihlobo and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) suggests that food prices are on the rise above inflation, after a relatively quiet start to 2019.

Food prices set to increase in South Africa
The year-on-year inflation rate had reached 2.3% for the first four months of the year. But May has shown a 0.5% increase, bucking the recent trends. According to Sihlobo, this will affect the total price of a normal food shop.
