Eskom said in a statement that the power system was under severe pressure this morning and the power supplier is currently using diesel generators to meet electricity demand.

According to the statement, the maintenance of units was delayed, which meant that diesel generators had to run through the night.

“Although we have enough emergency reserves to replenish capacity during the day, we may need to put in load tonight to replenish diesel and water with our open-cycle gas turbines and pump storage schemes,” Eskom explains.

Unplanned power outages stood at 13 063 MW at 06:30. This is a bit more compared to Wednesday’s 12 620 MW.

The power provider is asking users to use electricity sparingly while haunting to get power outages below the 9,500 MW target.

Eskom with a debt burden of R450 billion may be the downfall of ANC regime

Political analysts say the actions of high-ranking officials in Eskom could lead to the demise of the ANC government.

The pressure is mounting on the ruling ANC regime from the inner circles as well as opposing structures as well as from extreme groups to act against those responsible for the mess in which the power supplier is currently facing its debt burden of R450 billion.

The claims are varied, but many expect the ANC to take action against Public Enterprise Minister Pravin Gordhan, who is closely concerned with Eskom’s problems.

The Red Brigade is demanding Gordhan’s sacking, while Deputy President David Mabuza himself helped to throw Gordhan under the bus.

There is also a feud against Ramaphosa, from people who believe he should have forced Eskom to stay with his company in order not to employ any loadshedding before January 13.

Power grid remains under pressure, possibility of load shedding not eliminated

The electricity network remains under pressure and, according to Eskom, there is still the possibility of load shedding for today and the rest of the week, but will only be applied if absolutely necessary.

According to Eskom, unplanned interruptions at 22:00 on Sunday were slightly less than 10,000 MW and good progress was made over the weekend to supplement diesel reserves for the open-cycle gas turbines and water levels with the pump storage schemes.

The power provider said the power grid is still being monitored hourly at its emergency response control center and that the situation at its generation plants is unpredictable.

“Eskom wants to remind its customers that any unexpected changes such as additional interruptions or the unavailability of diesel for the gas turbines or declining water levels at the pump storage schemes could lead to short-term power short notice.”

While Eskom is struggling to acquire funds by making even more debt with loans to keep power grid stable, thousands of households are using solar power as an alternative to electricity in Northern-Cape

Northern Cape residents were given great relief, which would keep loadshedding at bay. While Eskom is struggling to make even more debt with loans so that it can remain standing, the residents have erected a solar farm near Kathu in the Northern Cape that can deliver an average electric power of 100 MW, which will last about 179,000 households continuously provided.

The system, which is the largest solar farm in the country, and covers an area of 600 hectares, has a total of 384,000 large panels and can provide continuous power as the system is different from any other solar farm, because power are stored in large set of batteries to ensure power is available on rainy or cloudy days.

Cedric Faye, the Chief Executive Officer of the solar farm says the power is saved to use later as needed.

World’s largest platinum mine group, Amplats production stalled and lots R1.6bn in revenue due to load shedding

Eskom’s load shedding in recent months had Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) in a position that it couldn’t produce.

The mining group could not extract the 92,000 ounces of metal that would normally be delivered in the first quarter of the year.

With platinum prices based on the average of recent months, this means that load shedding is responsible for about R1.6 billion in revenue loss, which also has a direct impact on state revenue.

The world’s largest platinum mining group, producing more than 80% of production, cannot afford to be forced to stop by Eskom’s poor service delivery.

SA is on the verge of a total “blackout” due to Eskom’s inability to provide power – National Power Supply and ANC regime are ready for phase 5 & 6

The ANC government and Eskom are reportedly in the process of getting plans in place for phase 5 and phase 6 power outages. There are fears that the system will collapse completely, despite Pravin Gordhan’s assurance that there will be no more than phase 4 shedding.

All available diesel has been bought to supply emergency turbines while boiler tubes at eight units in three power stations are getting down.

Power outages are here and will be with us. Gordhan acknowledges that parts are currently unavailable for maintenance and that it will take time to get the parts.

However, Eskom denied that there would be such drastic interruptions and said they were only “contingency plans”.

Gordhan says they understand the frustration loadshedding has put on South Africans and promised that Eskom will get it right in the next few years.

Eskom chairperson Jabu Mabuza and public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan has admitted that Eskom and the government cannot say when exactly load-shedding will end, but have called on South Africans to be patient with them.

The country gets regular updates, excuses as to what is to blame, yesterday it was the Cyclone that hit Mozambique and today it is lack of 37 years of maintenance. Corruption, theft and mismanagement of funds are always the roots of all our problems.

The national power utility has been implemented for the last five days, and Gordhan says the public will be provided with an update on the situation in the next 10-14 days.

Johannesburg hit by massive blackouts Friday and electricity providers were unable to explain why – perhaps due to incompetent BEE employees?

Suburbs across Johannesburg, South Africa’s economic hub, were hit by widespread power outages on Friday that electricity providers were unable to explain.

“Technicians are on site to determine the cause of the outage,” Khulu Phasiwe, a spokesman for state-owned power utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd., said via Twitter. There’s no estimated time for the restoration of electricity at this stage, he said.

Eskom has not implemented rolling blackouts in the city, Andrew Etzinger, Eskom’s acting head of generation, said via a mobile phone text message. A spokesman for Johannesburg’s City Power wasn’t immediately able to comment.

Eskom said earlier on Friday that there was a risk of blackouts because the power system “remained tight and vulnerable” and the power could be cut at short notice if there was a shift in plant performance.

In Johannesburg, there were at least ten neighborhoods for hours without power, which led to the water supply stalling, leaving thousands of people distressed, but elsewhere in the country there was chaos reported in the media.

Medupi units drowning in ash as contractor forced to withdraw – Shows Eskom’s failure to operate the plant at the completed units properly – Just one more accomplishment of the ANC- regime

The five power generation units at Eskom’s troubled new Medupi power station that have been operational are drowning in ash after Clyde Bergemann Africa (CBZ), which was contracted to supply and construct the dust handling units, withdrew its staff from the power station.

CBZ managing director Jeremy Kirsch confirmed to Moneyweb on Monday that the business was placed in business rescue last week, days after he spoke out about what he described as Eskom’s failure to operate the plant at the completed units properly.

CBZ has long-term maintenance contracts on eight other Eskom power stations, Kirsch told Moneyweb. CBZ staff are still on site at those power stations, he said.

The South African Communist Party says Eskom’s management is rolling out massive blackouts in an attempt to blackmail South Africans to accept privatisation of the power utility.

Eskom resumed with loadshedding for the first time this year on Sunday.

Power cuts continued yesterday and Tuesday after a failure of generating units.

“The management of Eskom, in the manner that they are rolling out these blackouts, is trying to blackmail us so we must accept whatever should befall Eskom. We should not be blackmailed into that. That’s why we believe that these blackouts can be avoided,” SACP first deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila stated.

Mapaila said one of reasons given by Eskom for load shedding was low stocks of diesel.
