LETTER – We were sold out in 1994. For 25 years we’ve been ruled by an ANC that could and did shun all other parties as long as it kept its majority and worked within the confines of our Constitution.

The ANC has an abusive relationship with the masses who keep it in political power, and in return get financially held down, mercilessly robbed of their economic freedom – their disposable income.

The ANC did a good con job on citizens in the last national election – imagine the number of votes one can buy with a R1.1billion election fund!

Soon there will be another unobstructed ANC feeding frenzy with Aarto and NHI, and if you’re not high on their party list you’re up the proverbial creek without a paddle!

African mentality in SA exceeds all expectations – Is there still environment where education can take place peacefully – Violence is destroying education system, burning down schools in black neighbourhoods is increasing

Violence in and at schools is destroying the education system of the country. The burning down of schools in black neighbourhoods is one of the increasing trends. As residents become angry about service delivery, schools and libraries are being burnt down.

One of the major problem that currently exists is cases of assault and murder on school grounds. In Johannesburg, a 16-year-old pupil was stabbed to death by a fellow scholar last week.

Furthermore, there were cases in Pietersburg, Tlhabane, Mondeor and Lentegeur where attacks on scholars by scholars occurred. Calls now come from communities that schools should be placed under police and / or military guard. Is it an environment where education and especially education can take place peacefully?

On a positive note, in the years of the existence of the Movement of Christian People’s Education, there was no incident of violence at the 35 CVO schools under their control.

Trade union group Solidarity unveil R4.5bn plans for “alternative Afrikaans education system”

Solidarity is ready to plough their resources into creating an Afrikaans-centric education system that will rival the one set out by the government.

Trade union group Solidarity (Solidariteit) have been talking big this week, after unveiling their plans for NetWerk. The project plans to inject billions into an education system that works for South Africans… but they aren’t looking at fixing what may already be broken. They are looking to create a completely new “alternative Afrikaans education system”.

Their plans would run on an alternative basis to the current curriculum, and the blueprints consist of establishing independent vocational colleges, as well as a brand new university and opportunities to “learn on the job”. Work placements and mentorships would also feature in this vision of the future.

South Africa’s education system has another problem: As many as one in 10 teachers at public schools are AWOL on any given day

The Department of Basic Education has published its latest School Monitoring Survey, showing where the country’s schools are improving and also where things are getting worse.

The survey was commissioned by the department in 2017, and sought to measure the progress of public schools through to 2019.

Across the major indicators, the department measured areas of concern including vacant teaching posts, teacher absenteeism, access to books and libraries, the functionality of school governing bodies, and the effectiveness of national exams.

While some areas showed improvement since the previous survey (2011), others underlined growing problems.

According to the department, on the positive side, access to libraries has increased across South Africa’s schools – even more so in poorer areas.

South Africa’s public education system a disgrace – The real matric pass rate in South Africa’s is actually 40%

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga has announced the matric pass rate for the class of 2018 – 78.2%.

The “real” matric pass rate is much lower, however, when you take the total cohort of students who started school and would eventually become the matric class of 2018.

Looking at the number of learners enrolled in Grade 1 in 2007 – the group which would reach matric in 2018 – the total was 1,002,500.

With 512,700 full-time learners writing matric in 2018, and then 78.2% of these students passing, the “real” matric pass rates comes in at 40%.

Students dropping out
This sentiment was echoed by DA Shadow Minister of Basic Education Nomsa Marchesi.

Marchesi said that Motshekga has again failed to address “the large number of learners who don’t write matric in the first place”.
