Multi-Billion coal-fired power station in crisis – Not one of Kusile’s six units is delivering power into the grid due to lack of skill and maintenance

Eleven years after construction started on Eskom’s massive 4800 MW Kusile coal-fired power station in Mpumalanga province, South Africa, not one of its six 800 MW generator units is currently delivering power into the grid.

Construction started at Kusile in 2008, and all six generation units were planned to be in commercial service by the end of 2014. However, the sad reality is that by the end of July 2019, five years after 2014, only Unit 1 at Kusile has been handed over for commercial service.

While Units 2 and 3 have been synchronised to the grid, they are still undergoing testing and commissioning, and the units are not in commercial service yet.

“It must be noted that only Unit 1 is in commercial operation, and Units 2 and 3 are still in the commissioning process following first synchronisation”, said Eskom deputy spokesperson Dikatso Mothae yesterday.

#EskomCrisis is a ticking time bomb: Gordhan’s only plan is to keep the lights on for election

The ANC government does not have a plan to solve Eskom’s problems.

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan acknowledged that the ANC government did not have the political will to rectify the broken power entity caused by decades of mismanagement and corruption.

Natasha Mazzone, DA MP, made these accusations that Gordhan’s only plan is to keep the lights on up until election. According to Mazzone, temporary measures will be taken to delay the inevitable and the truth behind the crisis will be hidden during the election period.

Allegations that Eskom was forced to pay salaries for March using a combination of its capital budget and a Chinese loan are also doing round. The funds were earmarked for the maintenance and upkeep of the power grid. Meanwhile, Eskom has bought diesel at twice the market price just to maintain the network until after the election on May 8, 2019.

The lie of Eskom continues, and the 1,100 MW bought from Mozambique and now being unavailable is only the tip of the iceberg of tragedies.

Maintenance at the Eskom power stations has been taboo for years – it was always white people’s way of wasting money and labor, and the ANC regime, with its strange culture of so-called democracy’s true mess, is now breaking through to taxpayers.

The reality is that the three power stations, Drakensberg, Ingula and Palmiet, perform so poorly that they use more power on electricity than is produced.

The three power stations do not really make a contribution to the power grid, while they are supposed to deliver 2,700 MW together.

Consumers can prepare for many more days of load shedding, and the further deterioration of the economy, as each day’s load shedding increases the debt burden by R2 billion.

South Africans should brace for more rolling blackouts as the power grid is unstable and cannot produce enough power to sustain the country

Eskom warned of wider controlled power cuts on Monday after six additional generating units unexpectedly went offline. The power utility launched stage 4 load shedding, which requires the shedding of 4 000 megawatts from the grid.

The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry is shocked by the sudden dramatic increase in load shedding.

“How is it possible for six units to go down at the same time?” asked Ms Janine Myburgh, President of the Chamber. “It is just too much of a co-incidence and we must ask if this is not another case of sabotage?”

Sabotage was blamed for a previous bout of load shedding, but the form it took was never explained to the public, except for workers who prevented coal deliveries from taking place.
