Lesufi stirring havoc! Gauteng Department of Education might place Afrikaans learners in township schools

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) will now introduce English and Afrikaans as the language of teaching and learning in township schools, in an effort to accommodate displaced learners in this province.

This is a statement by the GDE on Tuesday. According to this, the department will help schools that received few enrollments for 2020 to appoint qualified teachers who can teach in English and Afrikaans. These schools are mostly located in townships and some have received only 16 applications for gr. 1- or gr. 8 learners to attend school here next year.

The civil rights organization AfriForum will now demand in a letter written to the Gauteng Prime Minister and ask that the Education MEC in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, resign. “We will also file criminal charges for corruption and malpractice within the GDE under the leadership of Lesufi,” said Carien Bloem, AfriForum’s education coordinator. No wonder Lesufi wants to place pupils in Afrikaans schools – Gauteng Education accused of failing pupils by allowing ‘shocking’ school conditions

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday said the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) was failing pupils by allowing poor conditions to persist in schools.

The DA’s shadow MEC for infrastructure development and property management in the province, Alan Fuchs, made the statement following an oversight visit to the Apex Primary School in Lenasia. Fuchs visited the school with councillor Dave Dewes.

“This is not the first complaint about this particular school or the first site visit. In January of this year, the DA’s shadow MEC for education in Gauteng, Khume Ramulifho MPL, together with the former constituency head, and councillors, visited the school but were denied entry,” said Fuchs.

“This obstructive attitude by the school management and the poor state of the school was reported to the GDE, which responded by undertaking to deal with the concerns raised.”

Celebration surrounding the first private school in Vosloorus may be short-lived, as it is operating illegally

The Star reports that according to Gauteng department of education spokesperson Steve Mabona, The Ayanda Junior Academy has no licence as its registration application was declined in April last year.

“The process of registration takes 90 days when the application is compliant and because this school did not comply, they received a letter declining their application on April 13, 2018,” Mabona told the publication.

The school has been operating for over a year and has close to 250 students in grades R to 2, who pay between R1,450 and R1,750 in fees per month.

The owner of the school, Margery Tyobo, told the publication that her school’s application was declined because their occupation certificate had not been approved by the time they applied.
“They wanted an occupational certificate to say the place is safe,” she said before adding that she had lodged her application long before construction on her school had begun.

Afrikaans speaking parents should register their children as soon as possible online at Afrikaans schools for 2020

The FF Plus wants to remind and encourage Afrikaans parents to register their children at Afrikaans schools from 08:00 on the 20th of May 2019. The Gauteng Department of Education has an online system that parents can use to do so.

It is important to do this seeing as the system and the regulations according to which learners are allowed to enrol at schools are politically motivated and aimed at forcing Afrikaans schools to accommodate learners who speak other languages, which will ultimately result in these schools becoming English.

The FF Plus believes that the current system was implemented with one goal only and that is to destroy Afrikaans schools. Thus, Afrikaans parents must be quick to register their children at Afrikaans schools on Monday 20 May so as to fill these schools with Afrikaans learners for the 2020 academic year.

Police and and Gauteng Department of Education officials held hostage by the community in protest for new school

Frustrated parents and community members in Roodepoort, decided to take the law in to their hands after being let down by the GDE on numerous occasions.

Roodepoort Police and Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) officials were recently held hostage by furious parents and community members from Durban Deep at the Durban Deep Primary School.

Apparently, the GDE has not kept its promises to build a new school with new infrastructure for the community.

Frustrated parents and community members decided to take the law into their own hands after being let down by the GDE on numerous occasions.

Does MEC for Education really have our children’s best interests at heart – Lesufi is going to leave 14 000 learners stranded- Latest action by the department is contrary to the Constitution which clearly states that every person has the right to basic education

The FF Plus was shocked to learn that the Gauteng Department of Education announced earlier on 15 January 2019, that learners who still do not have a place at a school only have until this Friday 18 January 2019, to accept the placements offered by the Department.

This threat serves as proof that the MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, does not care about the future of the children in the province.

If Lesufi really did have our children’s best interests at heart and if he really was concerned about their education and training, he would not have allowed his Department to broadcast such threats.

The Department did not perform its duty to ensure that every child in Gauteng has been offered a space for learning at a school. If Lesufi had done his job like he was supposed to, enough schools would have been built in the last five years and we would not have this crisis on hand where there are 14 000 learners who will most probably have nowhere
