Family, friends and an ever increasing group of concerned supporters, of Ashley Oosthuizen (22), an innocent South African who was imprisoned for life in a Thai jail two years ago, are appealing to the ANC government in SA to pay urgent attention to her case. Oosthuizen’s family also fear that they will now rarely be able to contact her, after she was recently moved to a new prison. Her parents have apparently last spoken with her in December last year.

SA trapped in web of violence – 55 Murders a day, increasing rape while hijackings and robberies are the norm today – Will capital punishment really be the solution to violent crime?
Violence in South Africa has increased to such an extent that citizens across the country are pleading with the communist-minded ANC government to bring back the death penalty.
The spate of rapes occurring across the country has caused women and even members of parliament to ask that the death penalty should be reinstated so that the culprits will get the punishment that they deserve for such hideous crimes.
However, the ANC’s Minister of Correctional Services is not so keen to take the step, and several Afrikaner folks believe this is not a solution to the problem.
The country is experiencing more than 55 murders a day, and rapes that are rising at an unprecedented rate, while hijackings and armed robberies have become commonplace.

Cabinet will discuss calls for return of death penalty amid rising violence against women in SA
Justice minister Ronald Lamola has promised to take calls for a referendum for the return of the death sentence to the cabinet.
The calls have been made amid the background of rising violence against women in the country, particularly in the wake of the brutal rape and murder of student Uyinene Mrwetyana, which brought the question of gender-based violence and femicide back into the spotlight.
Lamola and minister for women in the presidency Maite Nkoana-Mashabane were addressing the media on Tuesday.
Lamola said he could not decide alone whether or not to bring back the death penalty, but that all he could do was to take the matter to cabinet for discussion – and then for approval or disapproval.
“Whether we are open to referendum or not, at this stage I cannot say… It is something we can take further as a discussion to the cabinet,” said Lamola.
According to him, the NPA and the court could never alone halt gender-

The South African political parties in favour of the death penalty, do you want the Death Penalty to be enforced?
It’s one of the more divisive topics up for discussion during the 2019 Elections, but the subject of re-introducing the death penalty often proves to be a popular one when the politicians are on the prowl for our votes.
South Africa’s abnormally-high crime rates and propensity for gender-based violence often gets emotions running high – which is perhaps a good enough argument for why this particular punishment should not be used as an electioneering tool.
In fact, these were sentiments echoed by Clare Ballard, the head of the penal reform programme of Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) in midweek. She said that the conversation merely deflects from the actual causes of crime:
“The death penalty is not a quick fix and it does not cure crime. Every time politicians avoid confronting the complex truths about crime and punishment, we lose a vital opportunity to examine what it will take to ensure real safety for everyone.”

IFP renews calls to debate on death penalty – Will the death penalty be a magic solution that will make crime disappear or will it be used in our unequal legal system to punish the innocent?
Durban – THE call by the IFP for a national debate on the reinstatement of the death penalty to reduce/deter the high rate of violent crimes would be a premeditated discussion that a country needs the death penalty, said a political analyst.
Bukani Mngoma felt the country should, instead, be discussing ways to curb the high violent crime rate and then make the death penalty one of the recommendations.
“We should also be discussing why people are being murdered and why there is an escalating number of violent incidents,” he said.
Mngoma said there was no evidence to suggest that the lack of the death penalty contributed to the increase in the rate of violent crimes.
He said although there were other countries, such as China, that practise the death penalty, the dynamics of South Africa, as a third world country, were completely different from that of China with the largest population, different cultures and practices.
