Telkom plan to switch off ADSL completely and exit copper entirely

In May 2019, Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko was quoted as saying that Telkom recently developed a roadmap concerning the proactive migration of customers to newer infrastructure.

“We are hoping that in the next five years we would have exited copper entirely,” Maseko said. This means that if it is successful with its plan, Telkom’s operational network would primarily comprise mobile, LTE, and fibre technology.

At the same press event, Maseka continued to say that the company’s fixed-broadband subscriber base – which includes ADSL and FTTH customers – decreased by 13,8% to 847 650 over the period and added that Telkom’s fixed LTE customer base now represents more than its historical peak ADSL user base.

Interesting statistics and indeed a fine achievement from a technology growth and future-ready strategy perspective.

Ramaphosa lets the cat out of the bag: The bad news: ‘Our money’s up’

Ramaphosa acknowledged in parliament on Thursday that South Africa’s financial resources were depleted while the country’s development needs were enormous. He did not say straightforwardly whether he supported “prescribed assets”, he said later, the pension fund industry and other stakeholders needed to talk about using pension fund assets to support the country financially. The country’s money is running out and South Africans’ pension fund assets are becoming an increasingly likely target for the government to pull the wagon through, it became clear on Thursday.

According to Ramaphosa, pension fund assets in other countries are used to invest in the development of the country and pension funds achieve good returns from infrastructure projects in particular. ANC at fault for municipal chaos, collapse of infrastructure and to blame for water shortages

The single biggest reason why residents in certain municipal regions have water shortages is the chaos in municipalities across the country, particularly those under ANC governance that do not pay their water accounts.

The Minister admitted that part of the problem is the collapse of infrastructure. It is too bad that she did not also admit that it is the ANC’s fault.

It is becoming increasingly unacceptable to blame the previous dispensation. Apartheid has nothing to do with the ANC’s fraud, corruption and sheer inability to govern. Municipalities’ outstanding debt to nine different water councils currently amounts to R14 billion. The money cannot simply be written off.

And the water that is available gets wasted or polluted. In April this year, the FF Plus lodged a criminal complaint against the manager of the Mafube Local Municipality due to the dumping of raw sewage in the Wilge River at Frankfort. The municipality’s sewage plant has
