President in absentia: More than 30! That’s how many times Zuma failed to answer questions at state capture inquiry

How many times did former president Jacob Zuma respond to questions at the state capture inquiry with “I don’t know”, “I don’t remember” or “I’m not sure”? We counted. During his testimony from Monday to Wednesday last week, he denied knowing the answers to 36 questions.

Last week, the former president dominated news headlines when he appeared before deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo at the commission in Johannesburg. He was expected to, among other things, respond to allegations levelled against him by nine witnesses, including former public enterprises minister Barbara Hogan and former GCIS CEO Themba Maseko.

He quickly earned himself the name “president in absentia” for not being able to answer questions put to him by evidence leader Paul Pretorius and Judge Zondo.

ANC stalwarts reacted to Zuma’s haunting week at the State Capture Inquiry: “He’s a spineless thug”

Former president Jacob Zuma may have dug his own grave with his antics at the State Capture Inquiry. His own brotherhood of ANC cadres has turned against him after he made startling allegations about some of them.

In what turned out to be one of the most dramatic weeks of deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo’s commission of inquiry into state capture, Jacob Zuma kept the ratings of news networks peaking with the shocking accusations he levelled against his comrades.

Nedbank pockets R780m from the parastatal Transnet -Nedbank is the latest in a long list of private sector companies to be implicated in state capture

The banking sector will be rocked by allegations of corruption this week, when Transnet tells the commission of inquiry into state capture about Nedbank’s involvement in a controversial deal which saw the bank pocket R780 million from the parastatal.

This week, Transnet’s acting chief executive, Mohammed Mahomedy, will appear before the state capture inquiry where he will detail how Nedbank made R780 million after changing the interest rate terms of a multibillion-rand loan three days after making the loan.

Mahomedy replaced Tau Morwe, whose six-month contract was not renewed when it expired early this month. Nedbank is the latest in a long list of private sector companies to be implicated in state capture.

Mahomedy’s statement shows that in August 2014, Transnet started negotiations for a R12 billion syndicated loan to finance the acquisition of the controversial 1 064 locomotives.
