Empty promises leave Free State residents fuming, Mayor’s house burnt down due to frustration on water crisis

Mayor Mamiki Mokoena, of the Nketoana municipality, which includes Reitz, Petrus Steyn, Arlington and Lindley in the Free State, house in Petrus Steyn has been destroyed after angry residents burnt it down to show their anger towards the shortage of water in the areas.

Residents’ anger over the ongoing water crisis has apparently boiled over after no running water has been available for a week. Mokoena allegedly arranged for two tankers to deliver water to her father, Benedict Nakedi, over the weekend for an alleged family gathering. This while the rest of the township’s residents had to cope without water. These actions apparently contributed to the residents’ anger.

ANC –regime states that water supply in SA is sufficient to meet all demands although sewage pollution and no maintenance of municipal structures wastes millions of liters of water

South Africa has enough water to provide the residents within the winter months, but then it must be used sparingly.

This is according to ANC government spokesman who also states that the water is sufficient to meet the needs during the coming dry months of the year.

However, experts are much more concerned about the water supply, saying the severe pollution in the storage dams of the country makes the availability much less than in the dams.

Dams’ water levels range from 75% full but the rapid drop of more than 6% in one week makes red light flicker.

Concerns are about the irresponsible waste of millions of liters of water that sometimes runs away from leaking pipes in streets, and then receives no attention for days.

The equipment of municipalities that are not regularly repaired or serviced has a huge impact on the quality of water coming into the taps and forcing consumers to buy bottled water.

Another ANC failure: Water shutdown notice – Gauteng taps could start running dry as Stage 4 load shedding drags on

It would take just two consecutive days of Stage 4 load shedding at two of its most sensitive pumping stations to lead to a water shortage, Gauteng’s bulk water supplier Rand Water says.

Until this week Stage 4 electricity rationing was almost unheard of, but Eskom implemented the measure on both Sunday and Monday, with no clear answers on when it would be able to fully meet demand again.

That makes water shedding a distinct possibility, even though Gauteng dam levels are high, with the Vaal Dam at 71% and the Sterkfontein dam 93.9% full.

Reservoirs are already below the ideal 60% to 80% level due to the recent heatwave and capacity constraints, spokesperson Justice Mohale said in response to Business Insider questions.

“Any disturbance with load shedding therefore affects pumping which is designed as a 24 hour continuous operation.”

The planned economic investment in the Far North Transvaal undertaken by China may be affected by a severe shortage of water.

This project, which will amount to R150 billion, will provide thousands of jobs, but may be delayed due to a severe shortage of water.

The area where the project is in the identified zone requires a total of 123 million cubic meters of water per year for the Musina area.

Mining operations, together with the establishment of a power station, various agricultural crop plantations, and a silicone plant form part of the project, which provides for approximately 21,000 jobs.

However, experts argue that the project can only be sustainable if provision is made in time for storage dams for enough water.
