Violence in and at schools is destroying the education system of the country. The burning down of schools in black neighbourhoods is one of the increasing trends. As residents become angry about service delivery, schools and libraries are being burnt down.
One of the major problem that currently exists is cases of assault and murder on school grounds. In Johannesburg, a 16-year-old pupil was stabbed to death by a fellow scholar last week.
Furthermore, there were cases in Pietersburg, Tlhabane, Mondeor and Lentegeur where attacks on scholars by scholars occurred. Calls now come from communities that schools should be placed under police and / or military guard. Is it an environment where education and especially education can take place peacefully?
On a positive note, in the years of the existence of the Movement of Christian People’s Education, there was no incident of violence at the 35 CVO schools under their control.
