Mining groups lay down workers due to heavy financial losses, SA economy troublesome while unemployment rate continues to rise

The Sibanye-Stillwater mining group retrenched 3,450 of its workforce in gold mines, which is nearly half the number expected.

An updated report on the reduction of its workforce, especially the Beatrix and Driefontein gold mines, points out that the decision was necessary after the five-month strike after consensus was reached on retrenchments.

Only one shaft in the Driefontein mine continues to produce, which indicated that nearly 6,000 permanent workers and 800 contractors would be retrenched at Beatrix and Driefontein.

The heavy losses of the mines eventually resulted in 3,450 permanent workers being retrenched, as well as 550 contractors.

Driefontein’s number 8 remains in production with only about 970 workers and 55 contractors.

The ANC’s president’s dreams are shattering at this time because of the huge tariff increases Eskom is now charging the municipalities.

Big institutions say they are tired of Eskom’s reckless tariff adjustments, and some industrialists have already packed up and left the country.

Industries that is depended for electricity to the manufacture of certain goods, such as the aluminium industry, have already left the country and moved their businesses to the Far East where power supply is stable and tariffs are much cheaper.

Anglo Platinum and Sibanye-Stillwater are two high profile industries that have already started investigating how to generate their own electricity to get rid of Eskom’s unpredictability with power delivery and tariff adjustments.

Meanwhile, many smaller businesses have begun to become self-sufficient with solar and standby generators and in many cases even cut their Eskom connections.

Rolling Blackouts on the cards as AMCU threaten secondary strike , AMCU represents about half of coal mine workers in SA

The tussle between Sibanye-Stillwater and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has reached new heights.

The trade union, whose membership also includes coal mine workers, has teased a secondary strike and this could affect load shedding too.

Why is AMCU set to embark on a secondary strike?
AMCU president, Joseph Mathunjwa, made it abundantly clear that the upcoming strike has to be felt on a national scale. The plan is to render the entire country to a complete standstill.

This, according to Mathunjwa, is the only way to make the government — particularly the Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe — heed their calls for a moratorium at Sibanye-Stillwater.

Mantashe, on Thursday, revealed that his department would be engaging with the gold producer after it revealed its intentions to retrench more than 6 000 workers.

Violent actions by groups of striking AMCU members are causing havoc and mayhem at Sibanye-Stillwater

Sibanye-Stillwater advises that violent actions by groups of striking AMCU members close to its Beatrix operations in the Free State province, have continued.

In the early hours of the morning on 11 December 2018, various altercations between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and large groups of AMCU members resulted in a
number of employees being injured.

Several employees are receiving medical treatment, with one sadly in a critical condition.

These incidents took place outside of demarcated picketing areas and in clear contravention of the interdict obtained by Sibanye-Stillwater from the Labour Court on 22 November 2018, the picketing rules which were established by the CCMA on 29 November 2018 as well as the subsequent order by the Labour Court on 5 December 2018.
