With the deployment of the SA Army in Cape Town’s crime areas, the SAP effectively acknowledged that they had lost the fight against crime and criminals. A SANDF battalion will now be deployed to assist the police in their duties.
The deployment will apparently last for at least three months. A battalion can consist of 300 to 800 troops. Experts point out that army members are not trained to do crime prevention.
A further problem is that SA military members do not have a good “track record” when it comes to the deployment of peacekeepers in African countries. Rape and assault by SANDF members on local populations has been reported on a regular basis, so the impact of SANDF’s deployment in areas plagued by gang violence, murders and drug trafficking will have to be seen.
Meanwhile, the SANDF has criticized Bheki Cele for his premature announcement when the military will be deployed and what will be done.
