The South African population has risen to 58.8 million from 2018’s 57. 9 million, figures released by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) Statistician General Risenga Maluleke have revealed.

The statistics are contained in the 2019 mid-year population estimates report released on Monday.

Of the 58.8 million, 51% are female while 49% are male.

Maluleke said births remained the main driver of population growth in South Africa. Population figures were also impacted by deaths and immigration.

The report reveals that by mid-2019, the country had recorded 1.2 million births, 200 000 net migration, while 500 000 deaths were recorded.

More than half the population, the report reveals, lives in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

About 15 million (25.8%) South Africans live in Gauteng. Just over 11 million (19.2%) people reside in KwaZulu-Natal while 6.8 million South Africans (11.6%) stay in the Western Cape.

New World Wealth has published its South African wealth report for 2019, showing the patterns of the country’s wealthiest people.

The report found that the country is currently home to 39,200 High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs) – defined as individuals who have net assets of $1 million or more.

This is a drop of more than 3,000 compared to last year (43,600), as total wealth declined across the country.

“2018 was a poor year for South Africa – total private wealth held by people living in the country declined by 10% from US$722 billion in 2017 to US$649 billion in 2018.,” New World Wealth said.

“This drop was facilitated by a weakening local currency – the US$ exchange rate went to R12.30/US$ at the end of 2017 to R14.40/US$ at the end of 2018.

“The JSE all share index was also down significantly during the year (by 29% in US$ terms).”

Brace yourself for an invasion of illegal Zimbabwean immigrants since researchers say they are likely to relocate to SA amid unrest in their country

Researcher at Social Services Africa says it’s likely that Zimbabweans will move to South Africa due to the unrest in their country.

The country has been rocked by deadly protests, with demonstrators taking to the streets after President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced a 150% fuel price hike.

Civilians clashed with police in the capital city of Harare. Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum says it’s recorded 844 human rights violations, including at least 12 deaths.

Research director of Social Services Africa Tara Polzer Ngwato explains: “We should start at the point and say that movement between neighbouring countries is normal. It’s not actually supposed to the inception of something that is a crisis. Of course, when we have a crisis in a country there are different movements. People are likely to change their decisions on moving back and forth between the two countries.”
