Lesufi once again disregards rights of Afrikaans-speaking communities in Combined School in Cullinan

It is clear that Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Education, is continuing his assault on the Afrikaans-speaking community as he abolished Afrikaans at the Combined School in Cullinan.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, the decision to do away with Afrikaans as medium of instruction at the school was made due to the waning number of Afrikaans learners attending the school.

The FF Plus, however, views it as scandalous that the Department has no regard for minority rights, and Afrikaans minority rights in particular. In fact, this is a case of double standards because Afrikaans schools are targeted and forced to accommodate learners who speak other languages and are even expected to build new classrooms, while Afrikaans learners are being turned away from certain other schools where Afrikaans as medium of instruction was done away with.

WATCH | FF Plus lashes out at ANC president: ‘Why won’t you ‘publicly condemn’ farm murders’

The time has come for President Cyril Ramaphosa to stop denying that there are pressing problems in our country, like farm murders, and for him to admit that Affirmative Action (AA) and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) have failed. These were the matters that the FF Plus emphasised in the party’s reply to President Ramaphosa’s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA). Just before the recent elections, the President said that he wants to tie young white people to a tree to prevent them from leaving the country. The truth, however, is that they are leaving their country due to AA.

The FF Plus has declared many times over that the party and its supporters are committed to help build South Africa. The laws that put policies, like AA and BEE, into execution prevent white people and other minorities from getting jobs. In addition to that, crime is the reason why experts, like 110 engineers skilled in the construction industry, are leaving the country.

What is Happening in our Schools? Parents Entitled To Be Outraged

Everybody reads reports of how fast the police responded to the robbery at the Edenvale High School last week. That is NOT the point that outrages parents. Consider that seven armed men. carrying one AK47, one R5 and three pistols, enter a high school in an attempted robbery and it simply seems too farfetched.

While two suspects were shot dead during the Edenvale attempted robbery and five arrested, it is something that should never have happened. No staff or students were injured but that is beside the point, the country could have experienced another student tragedy. The fact that shots are fired within a schoolyard is what outrages parents

Does MEC for Education really have our children’s best interests at heart – Lesufi is going to leave 14 000 learners stranded- Latest action by the department is contrary to the Constitution which clearly states that every person has the right to basic education

The FF Plus was shocked to learn that the Gauteng Department of Education announced earlier on 15 January 2019, that learners who still do not have a place at a school only have until this Friday 18 January 2019, to accept the placements offered by the Department.

This threat serves as proof that the MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, does not care about the future of the children in the province.

If Lesufi really did have our children’s best interests at heart and if he really was concerned about their education and training, he would not have allowed his Department to broadcast such threats.

The Department did not perform its duty to ensure that every child in Gauteng has been offered a space for learning at a school. If Lesufi had done his job like he was supposed to, enough schools would have been built in the last five years and we would not have this crisis on hand where there are 14 000 learners who will most probably have nowhere
