Ace Magashule – drowning in corruption allegations already – made a rod for his own back on the campaign trail this weekend, after a sly “donation” to a voter.
The campaign trail can be a war zone sometimes. Even an act of supposed generosity can backfire badly, as Ace Magashule has found out this weekend. The ANC Secretary-General – who was desperate for a PR victory after a bruising week – did nothing to help his cause in the Western Cape.
Ace Magashule scores a PR own goal
While visiting residents in Philippi, Ace tried to turn-on the charm. Instead, he was accused of “degrading” a local resident when he handed over R400 to her, once he’d inspected her near-empty fridge (video at the bottom of the post)
Has he broken the IEC law?
When it rains, it pours: His over-zealous act of charity could land him in a bit of legal trouble, too. There’s a suggestion that Magashule could now be in contravention of the IEC’s official guidelines. According to their Code of Conduct, “offering any inducement or reward for a person to vote for a party” constitutes electoral fraud:
This wouldn’t be the first violation of electoral law the ANC has been accused of over the past few days. The DA’s candidate for the Western Cape premiership, Alan Winde, has accused the ruling party of “inciting protests” across the country in politically-strategic regions. He’s suggested that the ANC “should be removed” from the 2019 Elections.
Winde’s comments were made more in hope rather than expectation. But with less than four weeks to go before South Africans hit the ballot boxes, our politicians are under intense scrutiny. Ace’s misdemeanour serves as a warning to those on the campaign trail: Tact is everything, and Gwede Mantashe may also have to take notes on this.
