Protesters in Ottosdal in North West have moved to the central business district and are torching the municipal buildings. The Traffic Department’s offices and the boardroom of the local municipality are on fire.
The old library building in this town is also being vandalised by angry residents.
Motorists are being pelted with stones as they try to pass by and burning tyres are used to barricade roads.
Workers at two mining companies in Ottosdal, Wonderstone and Idwala, failed to report for work this morning as a result of the march that is underway. These mines are therefore not operational.
Schools, clinics and foreign shops are also closed at this stage. OFM News’ correspondent Joba Matsheng is at the scene and heavy black smoke is at the center of developments.
Attempts to get comments from the Department of Education’s spokesperson, Elias Malindi, failed as his phone rang unanswered.
