The weak Rand makes investors move away from the currency, now rely on gold instead

The rising gold price, the weak Rand that just can’t lift its head, coupled with the uncertainty over the country’s economic situation, has moved investors away from the money unit.

Currently, Investgold is selling up to 5,000 gold coins per week, which is a strong indication that confidence in the Ramaphosa regime is continuing to decline.

Gold mining companies have also begun to focus on the trend of a gradual upturn in the price of precious metal, which has now reached its high price over the past five years.

The Rand, which is also showing its worst against the dollar since 2016, has forced investors to play safe and trust gold instead.

In November last year, the gold price was still at $ 1,150 an ounce, but is currently at $ 1,526, which is the highest for the past decade.

Africa Still Struggles To Mine Its Own Gold – Tanzania Gives Chinese Licence To Build Refineries, Smelters and Mines

Africa’s fourth-biggest producer of gold, Tanzania, has awarded licences to China to construct a mineral smelter and two gold refineries. The Tanzanian government seeks to generate more revenues from the nation’s mining industry.

According to Minister for Minerals Doto Biteko, 37 Chinese companies expressed interest after the government invited bids from mining firms to build smelters and refineries there.

“After carefully assessing the financial capability and history of those companies, we have issued licences for the construction of two gold refineries and a smelter,” Biteko said as cited by Reuters.

“We will also soon award special mining licences to two companies to build large-scale mines, whose individual investment is above $100 million,” he added.

Tons of gold mined illegally was smuggled out of South- Africa during the state capture.

In the course of 2012 to 2015, more than 34 metric tons of gold went to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, which did not reflect in the SA trade account.

The information was announced by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime researchers.

According to the report, the illegal gold mining cost the country about R14 billion a year. It is to believe that the illegal trade via Swaziland and Mozambique is sent to jeweler manufacturers in Dubai.

Observers deem this is one of the major explanations why South Africa’s economy is struggling, and suspicions are that diamonds and other precious stones will soon follow the same route.
