Cyril Ramaphosa has promised the residents of Alexandra one million houses over the next five years, as well as tablets for schools.
The president made the ambitious pledge while speaking to a crowd at Alexandra stadium. Ramaphosa also threw shade at Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba, saying that Mashaba was afraid of the Alexandra residents.
Ramaphosa’s speech in Alexandra came as part of his campaign tour. He addressed a crowd of thousands of Alexandra residents, and told them that a major government project to renew Alexandra would be implemented. This project was initially launched while Thabo Mbeki was president, but has since stalled due to allegations of theft and corruption. Ramaphosa also weighed in on the recent Alexandra protests. He said that Herman Mashaba was afraid of the Alexandra residents and that was why he did not want to personally address them.
