A 56-year old woman from Port Elizabeth is fighting for her life in the George Medi-Clinic in the Southern Cape, after suffering severe head injuries during violent protest action on the N-2 at Plettenberg Bay on Wednesday.
Haydee de Doncker and her husband were travelling back home from their vacation in Gouritsmond when a brick was thrown through the passenger-side window. Her daughter, Erin Burns, says she suffered facial fractures and a serious head injury. Burns says they can’t understand why violence must always be the answer, when people cannot get what they want.
“They’re protesting for service delivery, housing and what-not, that has nothing to do with the innocent people that are law-abiding and are just trying to make their way home. To go through such a traumatic experience, and for what? What did they achieve? Violence is never the answer.”
