The coastal town of Kleinsee situated in the Northen-Cape is flooded with illegal diamond miners. The town that was part of the De Beers group has recently been a quiet coastal village with almost no stickers. It has changed drastically over the past few weeks with a diamond rush of almost 8,000 “miners.
Land that was rehabilitated by the mining group was occupied by the miners who set up huts, tents and temporary structures. Neat and rehabilitation material has been extracted and used as shelter material while new vegetation has been pulled out on the dunes to strengthen sails and structures. Nearly 8,000 miners were counted before the weekend and reportedly it grew to 15,000.
Beach facilities like toilets and showers are taken over as laundry facilities and wash facilities. No toilets exist and the open grooves are used as restrooms. The police refuse to act against the setlers because they were threatened with death.
