SAA strike costing R52 million a day and with a bankruptcy record it could mean the end of the entity

More than 3000 workers affiliated with Numsa and Sacca downed tools at SAA on Friday over a wage dispute and plans to cut more than 900 jobs, costing the airline about R52 million a day.

The interim chief financial officer of SAA Deon Fredericks, said the strike was pushing the struggling airline to unsustainable levels. “If this strike continues, we are running the risk of putting SAA out of business,” Fredericks said.

Even though they are working with Mango Airlines to accommodate as many customers travelling on domestic services as possible and refunding passengers their flights or travel with other airlines.

SAA is facing a crippling onslaught by the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) and the South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca). The national air-carrier is threatening the unions with legal action if they fail to retract comments that the safety of passengers cannot be guaranteed.

SAA pilots willing to strike to ‘save’ national airline – will be a first in its 80-year existence

SAA pilots said on Thursday they were willing to go on strike, if necessary, unless “critical operational and technical deficiencies” were addressed. The Pilots Association has begun the process of recruiting among its members to determine how they think about the possibility of strikes. SAA has a history that its pilots will not go on strike, and to date they will only consider it as a last possibility. This possible strike will be a first in its 80-year existence.

The investigation and poll started by an independent service provider asked each pilot what they thought about a possible strike and the need to turn around in the struggling airline. Of the 635 SAA pilots, 516 (81%) participated in the survey, and 91% believe that the management team is pathetic. About 96% are in favor of having pressure to improve the shipping company’s conditions.

Motor industry may be crippled by imminent strikes – unreasonable demands from unions could lead to withdrawal of manufacturers from SA and job losses

Strikes could soon paralyze car manufacturers in South Africa if an agreement is not reached with the trade union Numsa soon.

The first round of talks failed, and a second attempt was envisaged, but the demands made by the union left a red light for the future of the industry.

The first round of talks in Port Elisabeth ended in stalemate after the Numsa negotiators demanded a 20% increase.

A next round of negotiations will be held in Pretoria, and the warning has already been heard that another failed round of negotiations will mean a strike that will affect all manufacturers.

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) represents the bulk of workers in the industry, and the Automobile Manufacturers Employers Organization (AMEO) is poised to start a second round next week.

SA liquidations increase by over 53% – economy’s poor performance is attributed to power supply, violence conditions, strikes, corruption, etc.

While the ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa made huge promises of foreign investors and many jobs for the 28% who are looking for jobs and not getting, new setbacks are coming to the surface.

The number of liquidations recorded in South Africa has increased by 50% during April this year, indicating the real state of the country.

Companies are losing the battle one after another due to the rough condition in the country.

Economists point out that a country’s growth is closely linked to power supply, violence, strikes, corruption, and a number of other factors.

Liquidations increased by just over 53% while in February and March it was less than 10% compared to previous periods.

What makes this remarkable is that the largest number of businesses voluntarily went into liquidation, which means there is no confidence in the business that the country’s economy will improve.
