Virgin Active gym pulls out before masturbation case reaches court climax

A criminal case against a man banned from a gym for allegedly masturbating ended prematurely on Thursday when Virgin Active withdrew charges.

The 18-year-old suspect was due to appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court after the gym laid charges of sexual assault.

But the man’s lawyer, William Fullard, told TimesLIVE charges had been dropped when Virgin Active agreed a settlement with his client before his court appearance.

The gym laid charges a month ago after saying it had banned the man for life. He was allegedly caught in the act by another gym member who recorded and posted the video on Twitter.

“I want this man’s face to go viral. This was at the Virgin Active in Stellenbosch @virginactiveSA. Absolutely abysmal behaviour,” the poster captioned the video.

The four-second clip showed the young man dressed in a red T-shirt and red shorts, sitting on the floor in the middle of the gym.

Illegal BLF land invasions – 16 farm owners have applied for interdicts to stop the party from occupying farm land

Sixteen farm owners have so far applied for interdicts to stop the Black First Land First (BLF) from occupying farmland of which five have been granted within a week in two separate matters.

In the latest case Judge Derek Wille on Monday granted an order in favour of Zindro Properties (Pty) Ltd, Trikores (Pty) Ltd, Altydgedacht Durbanville (Pty) and Antikes (Pty) Ltd.

The order interdicts and restrains the BLF from erecting or attempting to erect any form of structure on the properties; occupying the property; or unlawfully demonstrating at or within 200m from the property or uttering threats of invasion.

The properties were purchased for around R71million.

In terms of the order the SA Police Services assisted by law enforcement agencies, as required, are also authorised and directed to take steps to prevent an unlawful deprivation of rights to property arising from any invasion or occupation.

Squatters erected illegal informal settlement on Stellenbosch wine farm – Illegal Land grab shows people who are desperate for the land are not prepared to wait

As the ANC promises to move forward with its plans to rework land expropriation without compensation into the Constitution, the party’s supporters are tired of waiting, and are taking things into their own hands.

A new exposé by the New York Times has highlighted how farm land in Stellenbosch has been occupied by squatters who are tired of waiting around for the national government to deliver on its land promises.

Between March and August 2018, land belonging to a wine farm owner near Kayamandi, was occupied by the squatters and a new informal settlement was erected.

According to the paper, while the courts have ordered that the squatters vacate the land, the informal settlement remains. Those who led the charge to occupy the land said it was done out of desperation and frustration with the slow rate of land reform.

Photos taken six months apart show how land grabs have engulfed parts of Stefan Smit’s farm, as Stellenbosch enters another land dispute.

Aerial pictures of Stefan Smit’s private vineyards – and the squatter camp that has encroached on his land – have revealed how the land grabs in Stellenbosch are unfolding. The 62-year-old spoke to the New York Times about the situation, as the Cape Winelands becomes a reluctant battleground over land-ownership.

Last year, we saw another very high-profile case unfold in the heart of the province’s wine-making country. The owners of Louiesenhof Wines were granted an interdict by the Western Cape High Court to remove unoccupied structures and to prevent any additional people from setting up on a piece of vacant land owned by the estate.
