New Speed limits to be introduced to SA drivers – limit on highways will drop to 100km

The Department of Transport and the Road Traffic Management Corporation are reviewing South Africa’s current speed limits. The proposed review of speed limits comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) Act into law in August 2019 – introducing a new demerit system for South African drivers.

Speaking to the Weekend Argus, Department of Transport spokesperson Ayanda Allie-Paine said the proposal could see the baseline top speeds across the country’s roads reduced by 20km/h.

This would effectively drop the speed limit on the country’s highways from 120km/h to 100km/h, while the top speeds on main roads would drop from 100km/h to 80km/h.

Speeds in residential areas would decrease from 60km/h to 40km/h.

South African motorists can expect to pay much more in national licensing transaction fees in 2019.

This was confirmed by a government gazette published on Friday (8 March) in which minister of Transport, Blade Nzimande, announced a 14% increase in the transaction fees to be paid to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

The fees will increase by R10 – from R72 to R82, the department said.

In terms of The Road Traffic Management Corporation Act, local registering authorities (licensing centres) must pay the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) a transaction fee for each motorist it processes. This is subsequently passed on to the applicant and added to the annual licence fee.

This fee separate from the actual licence fee, with the R82 effectively added to the renewal costs for all motor vehicle licenses across the country.

Major new road rules proposed for South Africa in a bid to cut down high death rate on roads

In a bid to cut down on the high death rate on South African roads, traffic authorities are planning a number of radical new regulations.

According to a report by the Sunday Times, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has a proposed a complete overhaul of South Africa’s current testing and driving rules.

Some of these new changes include:

  • Motorists will need to undertake a retest every five years when they renew their driver’s licences;
  • Newly qualified drivers may not make long road trips in their first year (more than 150km or more);
  • Newly qualified drivers must still be accompanied by an experienced driver for their first six months;
  • Additional testing for truck, bus and taxi drivers;
  • Motorists will not be allowed to obtain a heavy-truck licence if they do not already have a car licence.
