Eskom problems not solved yet – Possibility of load shedding exists in the coming months

The DA said in a statement on Thursday that it had reliably heard that Eskom had issued a warning to municipalities about the “strong possibility of load shedding in September and October” this year.

Natasha Mazzone, DA’s shadow minister of public affairs,  said in the statement that the opposition party has now written to Eskom chairman Jabu Mabuza for transparency in order to clarify the matter.

“Eskom has continually failed in its mandate to provide reliable and sustained electricity supply and it appears as if millions of South Africans and the faltering economy will be abandoned by Eskom again,” says Mazzone.

According to the statement, each load-bearing phase is estimated to cost the country about R1 billion a day.

“Eskom has repeatedly plunged our country into deep trouble. South Africa cannot afford a repeat of the load shedding of the country earlier this year, ”says Mazzone.

Kusile under financial crossfire – R36 billion owed for alleged arrears for semi-completed power station with design flaws

Kusile, as one of the two new Eskom mega power stations that is supposed to deliver to supply sustained electrical power for the country, is apparently caught up in financial crossfire.

In addition to the enormous escalation of construction costs due to mismanagement and corruption, contractors at the semi-completed power station claims amid design defects a combined R36 billion in total for alleged arrears.

The power station that was supposed to have been completed by 2014 still only has one unit commercially in operation. The total construction cost to date is estimated at R161 billion.

The DA’s Natasha Mazzone is highly suspicious of how much money is being spent on emergency diesel at Eskom, urging President Ramaphosa to “come clean”.

The Shadow Public Enterprises Minister Natasha Mazzone has grilled Cyril Ramaphosa just hours before the polls open for the 2019 Elections. The DA MP – best known for her firebrand speeches in Parliament – wants the president to disclose more information on the deals to procure “emergency diesel supplies” for Eskom.

It’s understood that the opposition party has had a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) request denied. Mazzone and her team wanted to investigate how much has been spent on the utility’s fuel reserves since 2007, but they’ve had the door slammed in their face.

Natasha Mazzone asks Ramaphosa: “What are you hiding?”
For the shadow cabinet minister, the silence has been deafening. As Pravin Gordhan’s opposite number, she has been following the progress of Eskom closely and firmly believes that the ANC is misappropriating funds in order to keep the lights on up until Wednesday’s vote.

Well, this doesn’t look too clever. It’s reported that Eskom will be R7bn lighter this month, after its Chinese lenders raised their concerns.

South Africa could be set for another round of drama from Eskom, as the ailing power utility has reportedly failed to receive R7 billion in loan payments initially set to come from the Chinese Development Bank (CDB).

That’s according to City Press, who have reported that the creditors do not trust their promises over proposed maintenance work. It would be the second time in just over two weeks that one of Eskom’s promised loans failed to materialize after the Brics New Development Bank also did not part with their billions.

On Easter Friday, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni was forced to grant the power giants an emergency bailout in order to meet salary demands and diesel costs. It’s reported that the CDB has taken note of their actions

Natasha Mazzone (DA) fears Eskom could plunge SA into a “Chinese debt trap”, China is already taking countries for bad debts

The revelations about Eskom are pouring in from the state capture inquiry. Natasha Mazzone believes their secret deals with China are “risky business”.

We’ve experienced a shuddering last few days at the state capture inquiry. Former Eskom executives who were present when the rot of corruption set in have lifted the lid on some pretty heinous behaviour: It’s been enough to convince Shadow Public Enterprises Minister Natasha Mazzone that the utility has put South Africa on a precipice.

Eskom’s risky business
Well, where do we start? We heard on Friday that ex-Chief Financial Officer Anoj Singh wanted to jump head-first into a R25 billion loan with Chinese firm Huarong Energy. Eskom treasurer Andre Pillay told the commission that the crippling financial deal only fell at the final hurdle when terms couldn’t be agreed later down the line.
