One finding from the 2017 South Africa survey released by the IRR on 8 June 2017 was that almost 500 000 South Africans were murdered between 1994 and 2016. IRR crime analyst Kerwin Lebone said: “South Africans live with horrific levels of violent crime. While the murder rate has fallen since 1994, at 31.9 per 100 000 people, it remains one of the highest in the world.”
