Are the rats now fleeing the sinking ship? – Radebe and Cwele also resigns as ANC MPs

Jeff Radebe and Siyabonga Cwele are the latest members of the previous cabinet who also resigned as MPs. Add to this Susan Shabangu, Dipuo Letsatsi-Duma and Nomaindia Mfeketo, then it’s six ex-ministers who are suddenly no longer able to serve in parliament.

Radebe are “praised” because he held six cabinet posts in his term. The moves were indicative after 1994 to “take away” a minister from one position if it was not going well in the department, just to re-deploy him or her in another portfolio.

Political analysts rightly ask whether the resignations are seen as dissatisfaction because they have been posted or are there other dark reasons behind the resignations?

Another ANC MP bites the dust: Tokozile Xasa is the fifth to want out of the National Assembly, resigns from Parliament

Former Minister of Sport and Recreation, Tokozile Xasa, has officially become the fifth member of the ANC to tender her resignation from Parliament in the past two weeks.

Why is Tokozile Xasa resigning?
As reported by The Citizen, the party revealed that it had acknowledged Xasa’s intention to remove herself from her Parliamentary seat. Although, a reason for her departure has yet to be furnished.

ANC chief whip, Pemmy Majodina, confirmed that the former minister will be officially replaced on Monday, when the other spare comrades are sworn in to take up the positions of the four other MPs who have recently left the National Assembly.

Comrade Xasa will be replaced by comrade Judy Hermans on the national-to-national list, while comrade Makhosini Nkosi was replaced by comrade Lindiwe Mjobo on the provice-to-province list of KawZulu-Natal. See where your money goes! – R50 million a month is spent on salaries of 400 MP’s, some of which are sleepy in parliament, or just stay at home and do nothing on a working day

The previous National Assembly speaker, Baleka Mbete, who was widely regarded as a somewhat inept person for the post she held, was worth R2,825,470 a year, amounting to a monthly fee of over R235,000.

Then there is the deputy speaker who carries a R1,977,795 a year home that amounts to about R165,000 a month.

The meeting’s chairperson, Sylvia Lucas, receives R1,882,488 a year, and then senior parliamentarians receive R1,600,467 a year (R133,000 md) and younger members of parliament R121,251 per month.

This means that more than R50 million a month is paid to the 400 parliamentarians.

If the TV cameras provide the truth then there are a lot of parliamentarians who receive a reasonable sum of money while they sleep well in the soft chair, or just stay at home and do nothing on a working day.

Good grief! – Their term just started but a few MP’s are already sleeping in Parliament

As the swearing-in of MPs for the country’s sixth democratic Parliament got off to a start on Wednesday, a photo taken by a witness is spreading like a wild fire on social media.

It seems like these parliamentarians are finding the proceedings very tiring or just plain boring since they are captured sound asleep during events. With the new term still ahead, we can just shake our heads in astonishment and wonder what the feature has in store for our fellow South-Africans.

It pays to be a politician – These are some of the perks awaiting new MPs – Cellphones, R1-million salaries, free flights and airport parking

When the 400 newly elected members of the national assembly, and 90 members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), are sworn in on May 22, they can expect a host of benefits. Aside from a minimum R1.1 million annual salary, each member will also get accommodation, travel expenses and transport for their dependents.

Khuthala Noah, parliamentary media relations manager, told Business Insider South Africa that the benefits are continually reviewed and updated to cater for changing needs.

She said perks for the upcoming MP term include:

88 domestic journeys per year which can either be by air, train, bus or vehicle.
Transport to and from South African airports.
Parking at South African airports.
Transport of dependents.
Relocation costs.
“Tools of trade”, which include mobile phones, tablets and laptops.
Equipment, furniture and stationery for MPs’ offices inside the national assembly.
