The battle between the big municipalities of Pretoria and Johannesburg against the ANC government are still ongoing.
With Minister Tito Mboweni’s view that e-toll has come to stay, and that consumers have to pay their tolls, it is clear that the ANC is still deeply divided on the desirability of the controversial system or not.
Mayors say the e-toll is not needed for Gauteng, and should be discontinued, but experts say the expensive system will not be removed with a yes so easily.
The biggest opponent is Outa, who is positive of winning the battle with the divisions in the ANC, especially not to collect billions of rand of outstanding debt
The argument that a R0-10 fuel levy will ensure much more revenue to maintain roads is supported by a large proportion of governments’ parliamentarians.
Opinion polls believe the e-toll system was chosen because it was accompanied by a corruption bribe, but no evidence could be found.
