It lays stripped and looted bare, sold for scrap, leaving the town’s sewage, and blood from the abattoir, flowing into the field and then into the rivers and the Vaal Dam! Harrismith, which falls under the Maluti-a-Phofung municipality (dubbed “MaLOOTi-a-Poefie”), has been without a working sewage treatment plant for months, after it has been systematically stripped and looted by scrap thieves. The looted components include the cables and electrical transformer, rendering the treatment plant 100% useless and out of order. The embattled mayor of Maluti A Phofung, Vusi Tshabalala, the Chief Whip Mmoledi Moloi and the Speaker Malewatle Nthedi were recalled back in 2018 by the ANC after the municipality, like so many others, was placed under administration . JOHANNESBURG – Ekurhuleni police have arrested three South African Police Service (SAPS) members for attempting to extort R5 million from a member of the mayoral committee (MMC).

The city said the trio approached councillor Lesiba Mpya claiming they had a dossier containing evidence of alleged corruption against the MMC, Mayor Mzwandile Masina and other senior officials.

It’s understood they demanded R5 million in exchange for making the document disappear.

Acting spokesperson for the mayor Phakamile Mbengashe said the three were arrested following a sting operation by the SAPS and metro police.

“MMC Mpya participated in a sting operation where he made a money drop-off at a venue prescribed by the three accused. Upon handing over the money to the accused, police authorities pounced on the three officers and arrested them,” Mbengashe said.
