The former and current public protectors continue to butt heads, this time over the Gupta family’s controversial aeroplane landing.

Former public protector Thuli Madonsela has continued to weigh in on the work of her successor, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, this time calling into question her office’s decision to close the investigation into the Gupta family’s hugely controversial 2013 aeroplane landing at Waterkloof Air Force Base, according to a report in Business Day.

Madonsela told the publication that the Waterkloof investigation had been completed and that all that remained was for Mkhwebane to issue a report.

The former public protector said she reached out to the office after Mkhwebane reportedly incorrectly claimed that there was no public protector investigation into the matter, adding that her office went on to then close the investigation.

The reasons for this, according to Madonsela, are a “mystery”.

Gupta brothers ‘to splash millions on double wedding’ at Himalaya ski resort – but controversial family still owes Sun City money

The family at the centre of state capture allegations in South Africa is planning to throw a lavish wedding for an estimated R43m at a ski resort in the Himalayas.

The Times of India reported that “unprecedented arrangements” are being made for both Ajay Gupta’s son Suryakant and Atul Gupta’s son Shashank to tie the knot at the “picturesque ski resort of Auli situated in Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas”.

A “bevy of industrialists, politicians and Bollywood celebrities” are expected to attend the bash. Guests will be flown to the resort in chartered helicopters, the publication reported.

The celebrations will reportedly be held over four days towards the end of June.

“Almost all the hotels and resorts at Auli have been booked for the week-long festivities, for which flowers are being imported from Switzerland,” reported The Economic Times.

ESKOM gives a US company a blank cheque, and they are cashing it in for a whooping R13bn

The US company that designed the extremely flawed Kusile Power Station in Mpumalanga was given a blank cheque by Eskom, which it cashed in to score R12 billion.

Despite the fact that the engineering consulting firm Black & Veatch, which is situated in Kansas in the US, delivered shoddy work that continues to hobble Kusile’s performance, two senior Eskom executives told City Press last week that the company is still being paid hundreds of millions of rands.

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation into irregularities around the construction of the Kusile, Medupi and Ingula power stations, which cost a combined R342 billion.

A senior law enforcement official told City Press: “The second phase of the SIU’s investigation is looking at the performance of, and payments made to the value of more than R139 billion, 11 identified contractors appointed by Eskom in respect of [the] power stations”.

Guptas at it again – workers unpaid but lavish R100m double wedding planned – most likely funded by the ANC-regime?

The Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi where the Gupta family are reportedly hosting a lavish double wedding in February 2019.

The Guptas are reported to be hosting a lavish double wedding at a palatial hotel in Abu Dhabi.

The AmaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism published a nine-page wedding invitation on Friday and said the bash, an event lasting five days between February 19 and 23, could end up costing as much as R100m.

“The wedding is a double-feature, with Rajesh ‘Tony’ Gupta’s daughter Shubhangi Singhala marrying Chetan Jain and Atul Gupta’s son Srikant Singhala tying the knot with Akhya Bansal.

“This is the third publicly lavish wedding the family has funded,” said AmaBhungane.

The logos of Gupta companies in South Africa, including the Koornfontein mine where miners have gone unpaid, are featured in the wedding invitation.

Ramaphosa’s government doesn’t have an economic policy. All that’s been forthcoming is a stimulus package, plus two summits.

As the entrails of the era under South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma continue to be exposed each day before a commission set up to investigate corruption, so the country witnesses the consolidation of the political project spearheaded by the new head of state Cyril Ramaphosa.

But a key piece of the puzzle is missing: Ramaphosa’s government doesn’t have an economic policy. All that’s been forthcoming is a stimulus package, plus two summits – one on jobs, the other on investment. Do these add up to an economic policy?
