Are the nails in the coffin for controversial Public Protector?

The controversial Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, appears to have counted the days when considering the reaction of certain members of parliament after the matter of her eligibility as OB was tabled.

The National Assembly’s speaker, Thandi Modise, approved that Parliament follow the procedures that could lead to the OB’s dismissal.

Busisiwe Mkhwebane is probably the most important reason why the parliament in 2019 laid down rules to be followed when removing the OB from office.

The process is apparently underway, and opposition parties, excluding the Red Brigade, are expected to strongly demand that she be removed from her post, especially in light of the numerous court cases she lost due to incorrect information being investigated reports were recorded.

Unlawful R420m Gupta VAT refund – Sars legal head fired with immediate effect

Revenue service Sars said on Friday it had terminated the services of its head of legal, Refiloe Mokoena, with immediate effect.

It said the decision was taken after a disciplinary hearing chaired by a senior counsel from the Johannesburg Bar.

Sars said Mokoena was found guilty of serious misconduct.

“Sars has accepted the chairperson’s recommendation of immediate dismissal and her services have been terminated with effect from today, November 15 2019,” Sars said.

BusinessLIVE reported in October that Mokoena, who was allegedly at the centre of granting the controversial Gupta family a reported R420m VAT refund, had been suspended.

It said Mokoena was asked by Sars in September to supply reasons why she should not be suspended by the tax agency over the Gupta refunds. Mokoena was one of five executives who were placed on precautionary suspension in recent months pending the conclusion of their disciplinary processes.

General Manager of the Medical Scheme Council is suspended after it came to light that he misled counsel around decisions taken in favor of certain organizations

The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) has suspended general manager of compliance and investigations Stephen Mmatli.

The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) has suspended general manager of compliance and investigations Stephen Mmatli “following tip-offs related to his conduct in the affairs of the regulator”, the council announced on Sunday.

He is accused of deliberately deceiving the Council around decisions taken in favor of certain organizations.

He was apparently financially compensated for the “favors” he has shown to the parties and points to the corruption that is currently dominating the headlines of the newspapers.
