Virgin Active gym pulls out before masturbation case reaches court climax

A criminal case against a man banned from a gym for allegedly masturbating ended prematurely on Thursday when Virgin Active withdrew charges.

The 18-year-old suspect was due to appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court after the gym laid charges of sexual assault.

But the man’s lawyer, William Fullard, told TimesLIVE charges had been dropped when Virgin Active agreed a settlement with his client before his court appearance.

The gym laid charges a month ago after saying it had banned the man for life. He was allegedly caught in the act by another gym member who recorded and posted the video on Twitter.

“I want this man’s face to go viral. This was at the Virgin Active in Stellenbosch @virginactiveSA. Absolutely abysmal behaviour,” the poster captioned the video.

The four-second clip showed the young man dressed in a red T-shirt and red shorts, sitting on the floor in the middle of the gym.

WATCH |Teacher in SA monitoring grade 11 pupils writing mid year exams, with gun

The teacher from Mabusabela Secondary School was monitoring grade 11 pupils writing the mid-year tourism paper.

A team of psychologists was still on the ground giving counselling services to learners at a Mpumalanga school where a teacher was seen invigilating with a gun.

In a video that was widely shared online, the teacher could be seen walking between the desks with a gun in his hand.

The 26-year-old male teacher has been suspended and a criminal case has been opened against him.

Mpumalanga Education Department’s Jesper Zwane said the school also launched its own probe.

“When the investigation is completed, we’ll get the recommendations from the investigating team. We have not given them the time frames, but we’ve asked them to give it the urgency it deserves.”

South African Municipal Workers’ Union goes after corrupt officials for plundering R88m from workers’ coffers

The embattled South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) said on Wednesday that it has mandated its national office bearers to open criminal cases against other persons and companies involved in stealing money from the union account.

This as Samwu confirmed that the workers’ coffers had been plundered of almost R88 million in just three years and said that the report into this wide-scale plundering had been kept under wraps.

Samwu said the bank accounts had a combined balance of just more than R94.5 million by 3 November 2015, but this had drastically decreased and the union’s bank balance was over R6.2 million, and not the R538 which has been widely reported in the media.

“The special CEC has therefore resolved that the attorneys which have been implicated in the report should be removed from the union’s panel of attorneys and also be reported to the law society,” it said.

The Police bust SAA pilot who was fired for flying with fake licence for 20 years

A senior SAA pilot, who had been asked to resign earlier this year after it was found that he had flown commercial airplanes for more than 20 years with a fake licence, has been taken into custody, police have said.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said William Chandler appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was released on R5 000 bail.

Naidoo said Chandler’s attorneys handed him over to police at OR Tambo International Airport.

“This was after they were informed that we were looking to arrest the man on charges of forgery and uttering.”

The case was postponed to May 15 for further investigations.

Previously Mail & Guardian reported that SAA discovered that Chandler’s airline transport pilot licence had been forged.

SAA opened a criminal case of fraud against him.
