While Vodacom has cancelled its contract with PRASA for the provision of cellphones, which train drivers used to communicate with control rooms, it has also been revealed that ANC took R9 Billion from PRASA to pay for SANRAL e-tolls, according to Steve Harris from UNTU, which is a union within Prasa. Train drivers use these cellphones to get the verbal go-ahead to use routes to prevent accidents, because they can’t use the radio base system because that is not working either!

Drivers now have to use their own cellphones, which is against PRASA rules (and probably against their insurance too). Harris says that the lives of train drivers are in danger when they can’t get authority to use routes and have to wait at crossings, because commuters who are angry about late trains have attacked train drivers in the past. Cut your nose to spite yourself! Metro rail train services canceled in Cape Town following arson attack

The two latest incidents in which two trains of Metro Rail in the Western Cape went up in flames bring the struggling entity even closer to a financial abyss.

The trains were destroyed by the fire, and workers using the service later had to make other arrangements to get to the workplace.

Metro rail’s total number of trains and passenger vans have been attacked and burned by vandals over the past few years so that they currently have less than half their trains left in the Western Cape.

The Metro Rail said in a statement that the Cape Town railway station platforms 9, 10, 15 and 16 were so affected by the fires that they were closed, and that the railway station would also be closed for several hours.

All train services are canceled until later notice, and commuters will have to make use of alternative transport.

SA President, Cyril Ramaphosa meets reality – delayed for hours after chaotic trip on Metrorail train- 50km journey took four hours to complete

If Cyril Ramaphosa was looking for an authentic experience on a Metrorail train, he got more than he bargained for: Much to the delight of his political foes.

Delays, packed cabins and broken windows dominated President Cyril Ramaphosa’s train trip as part of the ANC’s blitz election campaign on Monday.

Ramaphosa got to experience first-hand the daily frustrations of those who use trains to commute to work, as the train he eventually got on board of was more than an hour late.

Squashed in a cabin with commuters, Ramaphosa said the delay was “unacceptable” after a 50km trip took four hours. So delayed was the attempt to canvas votes, that the president was late for a scheduled Top-6 ANC meeting.

Not only did the president of South Africa wait for at least two hours for the train from Mabopane to Pretoria, but he was on the train for almost two hours after it stopped.
